A hybrid secure broadcast application
As illustrated so far there are two levels of security that could be optionally configured within the
Originator Encoder platform. In a large distributed system, one can use both types of secure broadcast
solutions i.e. BISS and PowerVu CA.
As an example, a service provider needing to offer BISS and PowerVu CA within the same multiplex
could use the Originator encoder’s multiplexing capability to offer services that suit a variety of
customer needs. Figure 4 shows an application where there are two Originator systems transmitting with
BISS mode 1 scrambling to the service provider’s central location and in turn the two signals getting
groomed together with other local services that are to be scrambled, encrypted and broadcast using
PowerVu CA. This architecture and solution is ideal for service providers as they have the capability of
offering their clients different levels of security all within a single transport stream.

CONCLUSION
The Originator Encoder platform as described within this paper is not just an encoder. Within its
design are features such as multiplexing, and scrambling and conditional access that offer network
operators flexibility for all types of secure broadcast needs. The optional secure broadcast features,
BISS and PowerVu CA, provide network operators and service providers a choice of conditional access
to suit the needs of the services.
The multiplexing function within the Originator is ideal for network starting small with a low budget
and hoping to grow in the future. As described in parts one and two of this series of white papers,
Originator Encoders offer a good starting point for broadcasters and service providers worldwide.
Originator systems together with Scientific-Atlanta’s larger system solutions such as PowerVu Plus
BitMizerTM statistical multiplexing, and the PowerVu Plus Network Centre offer a range of solutions to
suit many kinds of content distribution applications.
