It could possible be a loose or misaligned sim card.

well it seemed quite sturdy when I looked at it yesterday

Problem has resurrected itself. I set everything up at my house. Installed latest open pli 3, added plugins etc. Powered down correct. Took it back to my dad's house and the original problem is back !

It's as if restarting the box kills the sim ?

I wonder if your clone has a pad backup battery I have never soon one in a box but your clone could possibly have one..

Or your sim may be loos and when transporting to your dads it has came loose

also are you using the same PSU at both locations

yes - same power supply

back at my house again and the sim is still dead ! I'd fix it again but I'm not sure how I did it last time !

either way I'm worried it will just break again on reboot

ok...

throughout all this...

when I click connect on Dreamup / Optiflash, and it says "now power on box"

sometimes it doesn't connect to the box at all, dreambox just loads up and goes straight to the crash LED screen... and Dreamup/Optiflash is still waiting

Normally just leaving it 5 mins seems to work, but now it is having a sulk and has not connected for about 30 mins

is this symptom normal or is it fueling suspicion of a loose SIM?

... and after 30 mins, now it DOES connect to optiflash... BUT this time after installing the flash, it prompts for the IP address BUT there is no IP shown and instead it just has the NO BIOS NO CA message on the LED

It did this once or twice yesterday too

for some reason using the older version of optiflash 1.05 gets further, it finds an IP and lets me flash an SSL

So I flashed SSL80, then I go to reflash SSL82 but when I power off/on again optiflash doesn't recognise the DM

(I'm sure if I turn it on again in 10 mins it will)

Faulty SIM?

Okay - I give up...

Current situation is...

Turn on box = "NO CA OR IMAGE - 2ND FAILED" with a picture, followed by "BIOS NO CA FOUND"

Connect with optiflash v.2.0.0 posted above (even though it says v.1.0.0 when loaded) = connects to DM but fails to give IP

Connect with optiflash v.1.0.5 -- does give me an IP, it sends SSL #79 to the DM but whichever SSL I then upload to it, it fails to read on reboot

Connect with Dreamup - hangs when connecting to DM

My diagnosis faulty sim, or sim reader in box, most likely SIM. Tomorrow I'll swop with a SIM from my box to see if the problem migrates to my box / cures my dad's box.

Why not simply accept to work with SSL#79 for now?
It is better than not having a box.
There are lots of images with that bootloader version.

At least you or your father will injoy the programs.

Because the box will not boot up.

Optiflash might send the SSL #79 to the box but if I reboot it still won't boot the image.

Weirdly, this morning the image booted up. It's as if maybe 'heat' is stopping the SIM from being detected on boot. This would explain:

a) why I have to wait 5 mins between each optiflash connection for it to detect the SIM at all;

b) why it suddenly started working when I took box from my dad's house to miine;

c) why it suddenly started working this morning.

That's my theory anyway.

Reckon the box has a hardware fault personally.

anyone know of any diagnostic tests I can do to isolate the problem before I buy a new box or SIM?

I was going to swop the SIM with the one from my box, but I'm scared his box might kill SIMS, then mine will be bust.

Looking at the inside of the box, the satellite tuner/decoder card seems to be loosely connected to the motherboard (forgive my terminology). As far as I can tell it doesn't clip back together snugly and just comes out again if I push it together. Still, I can't imagine why that would cause problems with SIM/bootup so presumably that's a red herring.

How old is the box ?

The tuner pushes home mate give it a firm push

I'd guess 3 months old.

Can't get the tuner to snap in. There is a "bridge" between the motherboard and the tuner, the tuner is leaning out on one side. Maybe I could put something in there to wedge it in place.
