Ondas Media denied frequency priority

One of the major topics at the current World Telecommunications Conference (WRC-07) in Geneva concerns satellite pay-radio over Europe.

Ondas Media, which is looking to start a pay-radio system over Europe similar to that employed by Sirius Satellite Radio over North America, has been lobbying at Geneva. It is looking for spectrum to be allocated in the 1467-1492 MHz Broadcast Satellite Services band (BSS) for a satellite Digital Satellite Radio project.

Madrid-based Ondas in particular was seeking amendment to the current rule where Geostationary satellites (like that operated by Worldspace) no longer had priority in terms of access to such spectrum. Ondas wants priority for its favoured Highly Elliptical Orbit scheme. It now seems that the WRC will postpone any decision on the request, and place the topic on the agenda for the next WRC – in 2011. This might make fund-raising by Ondas something of a challenge.
