13:00 My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Film The unheralded success story of 2002, this perky, low-budget romantic comedy - adapted by Nia Vardalos from her autobiographical one-woman stage show - has now accumulated over $240m in the US alone. Vardalos stars as a frumpy waitress at her Greek family's restaurant who goes against her father's traditionalist views when she finds a new job, gets a confidence-boosting makeover and hooks handsome American teacher John Corbett (of Sex and the City fame). While the happy couple-to-be - who share charming screen chemistry - are played relatively straight, Vardalos's in-your-face relatives are a source of buoyant comic vitality. Although there are no real surprises on the way to the fairy-tale (if rather chaotic) ending, the whole enterprise is swept along with unforced affection, humour and exuberance. Incidentally, Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson (of Greek parentage herself), co-produced.
14:00

14:55 Good Morning, Miss Dove
Film Director Henry Koster had the biggest hit of his career with the first movie released in CinemaScope, 20th Century-Fox's biblical epic The Robe, but prior to that he was better known as a purveyor of schmaltzy films starring Deanna Durbin, or whimsy like The Bishop's Wife and Harvey. This is an ideal subject for Koster, a warm-hearted tale (told in flashback) of how a small town feels about its spinster schoolmarm, and how she affects the lives of everybody who crosses her path. Koster brings it off most effectively, but star Jennifer Jones seems ill-cast as the prissy Miss Dove, a role that perhaps would have been better played by Greer Garson or Dorothy McGuire. There's no doubt that the film achieves its objectives, but contemporary audiences might find its mawkish tone and arch sentimentality cloying and irritating in the extreme.
17:00

17:00 Storm over the Nile
Film Zoltan Korda makes little effort to disguise the fact that this is a remake of his 1939 classic The Four Feathers. The script is the same RC Sherriff, Lajos Biró and Arthur Wimperis adaptation of AEW Mason's classic adventure novel, while some of the original location footage is also included, distorted to fit the new picture's CinemaScope format. Co-director Terence Young helps bring a touch of pizzazz to the action sequences, yet the story, about an officer who's branded a coward but who subsequently proves to have more pluck than his pals, has dated badly, and the cast seems very aware of the fact.
19:00

19:15 Watership Down
Film Martin Rosen inherited this adaptation of Richard Adams's cult novel about a group of rabbits searching for a safe haven after John Hubley, who helped animate many Disney classics of the 1940s, had departed owing to "creative differences". The visual and vocal characterisations are of variable quality, but it's hard to see what Hubley could have done to improve on Rosen's respectable version of what is a very difficult book to translate to the screen, especially when you take into account that animation for adults (the Japanese manga cartoons excepted) is still somewhat uncharted territory. One for fans and first-timers only, it isn't your average cuddly bunny movie, and contains scenes that may be disturbing for children.
21:00

21:00 Mean Machine
Film Vinnie Jones doesn't stray too far from home for his first leading role, working with several of Guy Ritchie's Lock, Stock company including Snatch producer Matthew Vaughn and an ex-footballer-turned-jailbird role. But what this remake of Robert Aldrich's 1974 movie The Mean Machine - remember, ex-football pro Burt Reynolds trained his fellow convicts to take on the guards - really misses is Ritchie himself, since first-time director Barry Skolnick and his writers lack the creativity and vitality of Madonna's film-making husband. That said, if you can overlook the rather thin characters and simplistic plot, the film's final third - an ill-tempered soccer match between warders and inmates - is very well filmed and highly entertaining. Jones isn't bad in a made-to-measure role, though the movie's best moments involve Jason Statham's maverick keeper and Jason Flemyng's unconventional commentator. Definitely one for the boys.
22:00

22:55 My Cousin Vinny
Film In this comedy, Joe Pesci plays the Vinny of the title, an extremely inept lawyer (who has never tried a case in court), who comes to the rescue of his young cousin (Ralph Macchio) when the lad runs into a bit of trouble with the law in the Deep South. Pesci has great fun with his role - a huge departure from his Oscar-winning turn as a gangster in GoodFellas - but the biggest surprise is Marisa Tomei, who plays his coarse Brooklyn girlfriend. Although she's great in what was her first major role, there was widespread surprise when she walked off with the best supporting actress Oscar, beating three British nominees, including Miranda Richardson for her role in Damage.
