Media player boosts Sci Fi web traffic

Science fiction channel Sci Fi UK saw a 502% increase in unique visitors to its web site in February after launching a broadband media player screening exclusive episodes of hit series Heroes.

The media player, supplied by TV-over-internet specialist Narrowstep, launched on

February 12 with an exclusive two week screening of the first episode of Heroes which has since become Sci Fi UK's highest-rating show of all time.

The Narrowstep player uses geo-filtering technology to block access to non-UK web users.

David McCourt, chairman and interim CEO at Narrowstep, said: "People are accustomed to short videos on the internet but this is the first time that popular long-format programming is making a really big splash on the broadband platform and we're very proud to be making that happen."

Ken Jones, branded content manager at Sci Fi said: "The streaming of the first episode of Heroes was an important first step in the development of the Sci Fi brand in the digital arena. Narrowstep provides us with a bespoke platform, from which we can broadcast over a variety of formats, both long and short form."
