Real Madrid are desperate to land Antonio Valencia before the transfer window closes and are prepared to offer out-of-favour forward Javier Saviola as a sweetener.

Despite acquiring Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Lassana Diarra, manager Juande Ramos is till keen on signing one more player, namely a right winger.

Arjen Robben remains the only natural wide-man at the club and Madrid are still not entirely confident he can see the season through injury-free. In addition, Ramos does not consider Rafael Van Der Vaart and Palanca to be adequate substitutes for that position.

The primary target remains Antonio Valencia of Wigan Athletic but there are many complications to the transfer. The main obstacle, of course, is the transfer fee. Real Madrid are unwilling to offer more than €12 million but Wigan are not interested in selling at that price.

Therefore, according to Sport, Los Merengues are trying a new approach, namely offering the cash plus Saviola. Needless to say, this is not as easy as it sounds.

Wigan are not in desperate need of Saviola's services, with striking resources Amr Zaki, Emile Heskey and new £4.5 million signing Hugo Rodallega already on the books at the JJB Stadium, while the player himself is in no hurry to leave the Santiago Bernabeu.

Ramos has not given up, however, as he is adamant that Real Madrid need one more attacker if they are to progress to the next level.
