New firm eyes pay-DTT plan

A new company called Dahlia TV is hoping to offer its services to a pay-DTT platform in Spain.

Run by a former executive of cable operator Ono, Fernando Ojeda, Dahlia TV has already come to agreements with some of the country’s major networks.

Ojeda is hoping that after analogue switch off one of the four digital channels every national broadcaster will have available could be used for the pay-TV model.

Dahlia's business model is simple: management reaches exclusive agreements with the channels for these to provide pay TV programming. In exchange, Dahlia gives the channel a cut of the per-subscriber fee. Moreover the company shares the transmission costs, collaborates in buying the contents and at the same time guarantees a certain level of advertising investment. Dahlia will also provide technology and is in charge of provision of smart cards to consumers.

Dahlia TV will be ready to launch its platform in Q2 next year. Its target is to reach the 75% of Spanish homes without any kind of pay-TV service. The company's goal is a massive audience paying between EUR10-12 per month for all the channels of the offering.

"We don't want to compete with Digital+, or with Ono either," said Fernando Ojeda.

Apart from the monthly fee the company also wants to implement a pay-per-view model for football events for example. The intention of the company is that initially there would be five or six pay TV channels.

Dahlia TV's shareholders are Swedish group 2TD and funds Provider Venture Partners and Constellation Ventures.

The company's financial plans are to invest EUR107 million, including subsides for the decoders, plus software and systems, transmission costs and advertising.
