Ellie Parker
Ellie Parker(Naomi Watts) is an eager young Australian actress trying to break into Hollywood. Often transparent and rarely likeable, Ellie is an all too-realistic example of many striving actors. Changing clothes, applying makeup, and experimenting with various dialects in her car while on the way from one audition to the next, Ellie eagerly transforms herself at a moment's notice for the chance of getting a role. When Ellie finds out that her loser boyfriend is cheating on her, she seeks solace in her best friend and fellow actress, Sam, and an equally hapless new love interest, Chris. Through chaotic and unrewarding auditions, hilarious acting exercises, therapy sessions, and messy one-night-stands, Ellie makes misguided but funny attempts to find herself in as dramatic a way as possible.

Birds Of America
As a young adult, Morrie Tanager (Matthew Perry of Friends notoriety) witnessed the death of his emotionally unstable mother and father. In the process, he inherited his similarly volatile younger siblings: Jay (Ben Foster) and Ida (Ginnifer Goodwin). While becoming a single parent at any age is difficult, it was especially troublesome for Morrie, who raised Ida and Jay while completing an undergraduate and graduate degree. His hard work eventually earned him a teaching position at a local university; he continues to reside in his childhood home, alongside caring wife Betty (Lauren Graham). Jay and Ida, on the other hand, still struggle to find their purposes in life. Ida is an aspiring photographer, but spends more time sleeping with strange men than snapping pictures. Jay weaves in and out of mental institutions, and literally steals from the rich to give to the poor. Morrie is forced to supervise Jay after authorities find him laying in the middle of a highway, attempting to commit suicide. With Jay's homecoming Ida quickly follows, much to the chagrin of Betty who is already overwhelmed by the former's presence. Both Morrie and his wife are incredibly image conscious, walking each step carefully in front of university bigwig neighbor and colleague, Paul (Gary Wilmes). Paul's good (or bad) word to school administration will determine whether or not Morrie receives tenure, and subsequently if Betty can begin her dream family with financial security. For years Morrie has successfully kept his turbulent past and dysfunctional siblings separate from his professional life. With his brother and sister present 24 hours a day however, the professor may lose his cool and an impeccable reputation in the process. Despite Jay and Ida being a burden, Morrie does truly love both -- and in the end struggles for their well being not just his own. Rating: Rated R due to explicit language, some sexuality, and brief drug use.

The Spiderwick Chronicles
After his parents underwent a turbulent separation, Jared Grace (Freddie Highmore) and mom Helen (Mary-Louise Parker) left their native New York and moved to her deceased father's dilapidated mansion. Once property of her aunt, Helen inherited the home but had no use for it until recently. It needs some work, but is suitable to live in. Jared is not very excited about relocating to the Spiderwick Estate and would prefer New York City's fast-paced environment and the company of his father. Instead his twin brother Simon (also portrayed by Highmore) and fencing-obsessed sister, Mallory (Sarah Bolger) join him. Shortly after arrival Jared and his siblings discover an old fashioned dumb waiter. None of the kids are sure exactly where it goes, and neither Simon nor Mallory are courageous enough to find out. Jared, on the other hand, enthusiastically jumps onto the small elevator and rides it to its destination. It turns out that the shaft is a pathway to their grandfather's hidden study and, judging by the room's appearance, no one has entered it in years. Jared explores the room and notices an intriguing book with a note affixed, warning potential readers not to open it. Like any inquisitive young boy he immediately rips the note off to take a peak. With the warning removed the title is revealed: A Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around, a guidebook written by Jared's granddad, Arthur Spiderwick (David Strathairn) prior to his disappearance 80 years ago. Unwittingly, Jared has just removed the guide from its protected place and initiated a battle between the seen and unseen. Amongst the unseen are goblins, ogres, and trolls with varying shapes, sizes, and dispositions. Some like Thimbletack (Martin Short) are harmless and good-natured. Others, namely Mulgrath (Nick Nolte) and his goblin soldiers are pure, unadulterated evil. For years Mulgrath dreamed of world domination. Without Grandfather Arthur's field guide, however, the ogre has never possessed the knowledge necessary to do so. Now only one young boy prevents the ogre from moving forward, and he is incapable of defending the book alone. But with a little help from Helen, Simon, Mallory and his invisible friends Jared might just save the world after all. The Spiderwick Chronicles is based upon the identically titled series of children's books penned by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black. At the box office the picture garnered close to $163 million in ticket sales internationally; DVD and Blu-ray sales were similarly brisk and earned an additional of $27 million of revenue. With both figures combined the film recuperated twice its $90 million production cost. Rating: Rated PG for scary creature action and violence, peril, and some thematic elements.

Clueless
Cher (Alicia Silverstone) and Dionne (Stacey Dash), both named after "great singers of the past that now do infomercials," are pampered upper-class girls who care less about getting good grades than wearing the right clothes and being as popular as possible. But Cher, who lives with her tough yet warm-hearted lawyer dad (Dan Hedaya) and hunky, sensitive stepbrother (Paul Rudd), also has an innate urge to help those less fortunate -- like the two introverted teachers she brings together ("negotiating" herself improved grades in the process) and new friend Tai (Brittany Murphy), who starts out a geek and ends up a Cher prodigy. Cher also possesses her own sensitive side, and she is looking for the perfect boyfriend, whom she ends up finding where she least expected.
