OWEN SUFFERS FRESH INJURY SETBACK

Michael Owen's World Cup dream has suffered a major setback after Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed the striker would be out for "two to three weeks" with a groin injury.

It ends any lingering hope Owen had of being involved in England's final two qualifiers against Ukraine and Belarus next month.

And, given Fabio Capello was at Old Trafford to witness Owen limping off after just 20 minutes of United's 2-1 Champions League win over Wolfsburg, there must now be a huge question mark over the 29-year-old forward's ability to force his way into the Italian's plans before England head to South Africa next summer.

"Michael felt a slight groin injury after training on Sunday," revealed Ferguson.

"He thought he was fine to play but on a wet surface, when he tried to turn quickly, it came back again.

"It is not a serious one and I am not worried because players do get them, but he will be out for two to three weeks.

"The only good part is that his fitness levels are very good."

ARGENTINA WIN GHANA FRIENDLY

Martin Palermo led Argentina to a 2-0 friendly win over Ghana as Diego Maradona's side prepare for the culmination of their World Cup qualifying campaign.

Boca Juniors' record goalscorer gave Argentina a two-goal lead by half-time as the Albicelestes sought an impressive win in Cordoba despite playing with a domestically-based squad.

Palermo, who turns 36 next month, captained Argentina and opened the scoring in the 28th minute with a volley, after a Luciano Fabian Monzon cross from the left.

Eleven minutes later, the attacker headed a cross from his club team-mate Federico Insua to widen the gap over the Africans, who have already booked a berth in the World Cup finals.

In the second half, Argentina coach Maradona made six substitutions to field debutants such as Jesus Mendez, Juan Insaurralde, Luis Rodriguez, Rodrigo Brana and Osvaldo Nicolas Gaitan.

Argentina dominated the match and deserved at least one more goal, while their goalkeeper Diego Pozo had very little job to do at the Estadio Olimpico Chateau Carreras.

Milovan Rajevac's Ghana players, meanwhile, made some tough fouls that forced Chilean referee Enrique Osses book Ofosu Appiah, Kofi Boakye and Frank Boateng.

Argentina are now focused on their final two World Cup qualifiers against Peru (home) and Uruguay (away), on October 10 and 14 respectively.

The South Americans lie fifth in the Conmebol Qualifying Zone, a play-off position to play a CONCACAF nation to progress to the World Cup.

Palermo, thanks to his superb form on Wednesday night, may gain a place in the starting XI to play Peru at the Estadio Monumental.

Chelsea defender Paulo Ferreira has been included in the Portugal squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers after recovering from a long-term knee injury.

Nuno Assis and Cesar Peixoto also return to the squad.

"We have a good team, we have players full of belief, a fantastic team spirit and an extreme desire to achieve the ultimate goal which is to qualify for the World Cup."

Portugal play Hungary in the Estadio da Luz on October 10 before facing Malta in Guimaraes four days later.

Queiroz's team are third in Group One, five points behind leaders Denmark and two behind Sweden.

FRANCE CALL ON DOUCHEZ

Rennes goalkeeper Nicolas Douchez has been handed a debut call-up to the France squad by Raymond Domenech, who also confirmed the absence of Yoann Gourcuff through injury.

Gourcuff picked up a thigh knock in Bordeaux's Champions League victory over Maccabi Haifa on Wednesday night and will now play no part in the World Cup qualifiers against the Faroe Islands and Austria.

Douchez , 29, is one of four goalkeepers in the 24-man squad.

Moussa Sissoko has been named in the list for the second time but there is no place for Loic Remy following Nice's poor run of results.

France face the Faroe Islands on October 10 at Guingamp before meeting Austria at Saint-Denis four days later.

Les Bleus are second in Group 7, four points behind Serbia and four ahead of Austria.

France squad: Carrasso (Bordeaux), Douchez (Rennes), Lloris (Lyon), Mandanda (Marseille); Abidal (Barcelona), Clichy (Arsenal), Escude (Sevilla), Evra (Manchester United), Fanni (Rennes), Gallas (Arsenal), Sagna (Arsenal), Squillaci (Sevilla); Diaby (Arsenal), L Diarra (Real Madrid), A Diarra (Bordeaux), Malouda (Chelsea), Sissoko (Toulouse), Toulalan (Lyon), Ribery (Bayern Munich); Anelka (Chelsea), Benzema (Real Madrid), Gignac (Toulouse), Govou (Lyon), Henry (Barcelona).

BENZEMA SET FOR FRANCE REPRIEVE

France coach Raymond Domenech insists he will not ostracise Karim Benzema despite the Real Madrid forward's "unacceptable" comments.

There was speculation that Benzema would not be included in the latest squad after the striker's surprise admission that he had not really felt like playing in last month's World Cup qualifier against Serbia and had struggled to give his all.

However, he has been included by Domenech, who revealed he will ask Benzema to explain himself but will not let it affect his relationship with the 21-year-old.

"You can't say that at this level," said Domenech. "He has the right to think that a bit, that can cross his mind, but he does not have the right to say it, nor to do it. That's unacceptable.

"However, I can extend my hand to someone when they make a mistake. That's the case in this situation.

"He's young, he has talent, a good future. I'm not going to condemn anyone for a comment. The pitch is the only answer which counts.

"I'm very optimistic for him. He understood that he has to concentrate and he has a desire to be part of this team.

"I'm not a telephone man but one of relationships, direct contact. We will discuss this, it's important to. But I prefer to have him in front of me and to talk about it. It's better than a phone call which doesn't help anything."

France face the Faroe Islands on October 10 at Guingamp before meeting Austria at Saint-Denis four days later.

Les Bleus are second in Group 7, four points behind Serbia and four ahead of Austria.

Domenech has handed a debut call up to Rennes goalkeeper Nicolas Douchez and also included Moussa Sissoko in his squad for the second time.

However, it looks like Patrick Vieira's international career is over after the Inter Milan midfielder was snubbed yet again, while there is also no place for Loic Remy following Nice's poor run of results.

Yoann Gourcuff aggravated a thigh injury in Bordeaux's Champions League victory over Maccabi Haifa and will now play no part in the World Cup qualifiers.

EDUARDO COULD MAKE WC CLASH

Eduardo has been forced to pull out of the Croatia squad for the friendly against Qatar, although there is a small chance the Arsenal striker will be fit for the World Cup qualifier in Kazakhstan four days later.

The Brazilian-born forward aggravated a thigh muscle injury against Olympiacos in the Champions League on Tuesday and is now likely to miss both of Croatia's matches.

Croatia coach Slaven Bilic has called up Nikica Jelavic, who could make his debut following his impressive performance and goal in Rapid Vienna's 1-1 draw with Celtic.

"Because of a thigh muscle injury, Croatian national team player Eduardo da Silva is most likely not able to play in the upcoming matches against Qatar and Kazakhstan," read a statement on the federation's website, www.hns-cff.hr.

"The good news is that Eduardo will still come to the camp to finish his rehabilitation process with the medical staff in case he can show there might be a chance to play in Astana, on October 14."

Croatia host Qatar on October 10 before travelling to Kazakhstan four days later for their qualifying tie.

Bilic's men are two points above Ukraine, who have a game in hand, in the race for second spot, with England already qualified from Group Six.

BALE BACK FOR WALES

Tottenham defender Gareth Bale is back in the Wales squad after just 95 minutes of action this season for his club.

Bale had not played in a Premier League victory for Spurs - a run spanning 25 matches over two years - until last weekend's 5-0 home win over Burnley.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp admitted he brought him on for the last five minutes to give him the chance to end his embarrassing record.

Redknapp said: "I felt the unwanted record had been really affecting him, so I gave him those last few minutes to be on the pitch to experience a victory."

Bale has suffered a string of ankle and knee injuries that have wrecked his two years at White Hart Lane following a move from Southampton in May 2007.

His Wales career has also been handicapped, with the Cardiff-born player last representing his country against Estonia in May this year.

Bale had been due to travel with the squad for a World Cup game in Azerbaijan a couple of days later but managed to suffer a knee injury on a family day off while playing in the garden with his niece.

Since then Bale has been battling back from that injury and apart from the Burnley game, his only other match this season had been Spurs' 5-1 Carling Cup success at Preston.

But he is now fully fit and Wales boss John Toshack has recalled him for the World Cup qualifiers against Finland and Liechtenstein on October 10 and 14 respectively.

Football Association of Wales spokesman Ceri Stennett said: "We are just glad to have him back in the squad, he has had so much bad luck with injuries since he moved to Spurs."

Wales are without unlucky Doncaster man Brian Stock. The midfielder finally made his full Wales debut, at 27, in the last World Cup qualifier against Russia in September but since then he has had a knee operation and will be out for two months.

Also out is Fulham's Simon Davies, who is still struggling with a foot injury despite playing for the west Londoners this season.

Davies did not figure against Arsenal at the weekend or Basle in the Europa League on Thursday night and after discussions with Toshack it has been decided he needs more time to sort out the injury.

West Ham's Jack Collison is also out, having not played since damaging his calf while training with Wales ahead of the Russia game last month.

His absence leaves open the possibility that he could switch international allegiances. Until he makes his competitive bow for Wales the man from Watford can still opt to play for England, and Wales' next meaningful game after this qualifying double header will not be until the Euro 2012 campaign begins next autumn.

The FAW do not belief this will be a problem, however. Collison has continually pledged himself to Wales and once he reaches his 21st birthday next year it will be more difficult to switch countries.

Toshack has named five strikers, but one from Simon Church, Sam Vokes and Ched Evans will be initially assigned to the under-21s, who have a crucial UEFA Championship qualifier against Bosnia at Wrexham on the same day that the seniors face Finland.

There could also be a decision to give under-21 boss Brian Flynn a senior defender to boost his squad, with the likes of Neal Eardley or Lewin Nyatanga in the frame.

Wales squad:

Hennessey (Wolves), Myhill (Hull), Price (Brentford, on loan from Derby), Bale (Tottenham), J Collins (Aston Villa), Eardley (Blackpool), Gabbidon (West Ham), Gunter (Nottingham.Forest), Morgan (Peterborough), Nyatanga (Bristol City), Ricketts (Bolton), A Williams (Swansea), Ledley (Cardiff), Cotterill (Sheffield United), Edwards (Wolves), Ramsey (Arsenal), Vaughan (Blackpool), Bellamy (Manchester City), Church (Reading), C Evans (Sheffield United), Earnshaw (Nottingham.Forest), Vokes (Wolves).

INIESTA AND RAMOS BACK FOR SPAIN

Andres Iniesta and Sergio Ramos have been included in the Spain squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Armenia and Bosnia-Herzegovina after recovering from long-term injuries.

Ramos has been absent from the past three squads while Iniesta was last available back in February, but both now return as does Andoni Iraola - a year since the Athletic Bilbao defender's last call-up.

Vicente Del Bosque has made no other changes to the 24-man list which remains mainly the same as the group that secured World Cup qualification against Estonia last month.

Spain visit Armenia on October 10 before playing in Bosnia-Herzegovina four days later.

Del Bosque said: "We are already qualified for the World Cup and we only have five games before the tournament - two now, two more in November and one in March.

"We have to profit from them to the max.

"This is the group that will represent us in South Africa.

"That doesn't mean that this is a closed list, but we cannot be whimsical or go ahead shaking it up all the time."

Del Bosque also revealed the reason behind the inclusion of a greater number of players.

He added: "We called up 24 because we have two games, because there is intense club competition, and for the very purity of the tournament - because Bosnia and Turkey are playing to qualify."

Squad: Casillas (Real Madrid), Reina (Liverpool), Diego Lopez (Villarreal); Albiol (Real Madrid), Capdevila (Villarreal), Iraola (Athletic Bilbao), Marchena (Valencia), Monreal (Osasuna), Pique (Barcelona), Puyol (Barcelona), Ramos (Real Madrid); Alonso (Real Madrid), Busquets (Barcelona), Cazorla (Villarreal), Fabregas (Arsenal), Xavi (Barcelona), Iniesta (Barcelona), Riera (Liverpool), Senna (Villarreal); Guiza (Fenerbahce), Mata (Valencia), Silva (Valencia), Torres (Liverpool), Villa (Valencia).

SEITARIDIS BACK IN GREECE FOLD

Giourkas Seitaridis has been handed a surprise international recall by Greece boss Otto Rehhagel for the crucial World Cup qualifiers against Latvia and Luxembourg.

The 28-year-old Panathinaikos right-back has been out of the national team picture since earning his 66th cap against Israel in April when he was with Atletico Madrid.

Seitaridis, a Euro 2004 winner, had been without a club since he was released by Atletico in May. He re-signed for Panathinaikos in September on a four-year contract but has yet to feature in a competitive match.

Striker Vangelis Mantzios is another surprise name in the 24-man squad.

Mantzios, 26, has been drafted in for the injured Angelos Charisteas.

Mantzios, who has seven caps - the last of which came in a friendly against Italy in November 2008 - is way down the Panathinaikos pecking order with Djibril Cisse, Dimitris Salpigidis and Antonis Petropoulos all ahead of the former Panionios man.

Greece are second, three points behind Switzerland in Group 2, and are level on 14 points with Latvia. Rehhagel's men complete their qualification with home contests against the Latvians and Luxembourg on October 10 and 14 respectively.

Squad: Kostas Chalkias (PAOK), Michalis Sifakis (Aris), Alexandros Tzorvas (Panathinaikos); Avraam Papadopoulos (Olympiakos), Sotiris Kyrgiakos (Liverpool), Sotiris Papastathopoulos (Genoa), Vangelis Moras (Bologna), Vasilis Torosidis (Olympiakos), Nikos Spiropoulos (Panathinaikos), Loukas Vintra (Panathinaikos), Giourkas Seitaridis (Panathinaikos); Sotiris Ninis (Panathinaikos), Alexandros Tziolis (Panathinaikos), Vasilis Pliatsikas (Schalke), Grigoris Makos, Giorgos Fotakis (PAOK), Giorgos Karagounis (Panathinaikos), Kostas Katsouranis (Panathinaikos), Christos Patsatzoglou (Omonia); Dimitris Salpigidis (Panathinaikos), Theofanis Gekas (Bayer Leverkusen), Yiannis Amanatidis (Eintracht Frankfurt), Giorgos Samaras (Celtic), Vangelis Mantzios (Panathinaikos).

CAHILL: I CAN CUT IT FOR ENGLAND

Bolton defender Gary Cahill is confident he has what it takes to make the grade as an England international.

The centre-back has been earning rave reviews with his performances for the Trotters and Capello has been keeping a watchful eye on the 23-year-old.

Having first called up Cahill, who has yet to make his senior debut, into his squad to cover for the injured Rio Ferdinand ahead of June's qualifier against Kazakhstan the Italian has closely followed his progress since.

Capello was in the stands to watch Bolton's 2-1 victory at Birmingham last weekend and will be at the Reebok Stadium for the visit of Tottenham.

With England already having booked their place at the World Cup in South Africa all the signs point towards Cahill finally being given his bow for the senior side with their final two qualifiers coming up in Ukraine a week on Saturday and Belarus at home four days later.

The player is trying to remain focused on playing well for Wanderers but he has no doubts he can develop into an established international.

"I hope he (Capello) took some positive things from my performance at Birmingham but I'll just keep trying, give 100% and it takes me wherever it takes me," said the former Aston Villa player, who moved to Bolton for a bargain £5million in January 2008.

"I definitely think I can play for England one day. I think you've got to be positive, got to be confident in your own ability.

"I'm hungry to get there. I work hard and hopefully I'll get there in the end.

"I think I'm improving game by game with my positional play, I know the role at centre-back a lot better than when I first came into it.

"I'm making fewer mistakes. When I first came I gave away a couple of penalties and a few rash things, but now I'm cutting that out of my game.

"I've still got a lot to learn, I'm only a young lad, and if I can keep learning hopefully I can go on to bigger and better things."

Manager Gary Megson is backing Cahill to establish himself as a regular international.

"I would be confident enough, with the knowledge I have of Gary, to chuck him in whatever the game," he said.

"Now England have qualified there is the opportunity to play Gary but that's the manager's decision.

"All Gary can do is keep playing well and hope the manager comes down on his side at some stage."

Capello names his squad on Monday and Cahill's inclusion could come at the expense of Manchester United's Wes Brown, who has made just two Premier League starts this season, or Matthew Upson, who has missed West Ham's last two matches with a calf strain.

The Italian will resist the temptation to radically change his personnel but Cahill is one of a number of fringe players who are likely to be given a chance to impress.

However, with a 100% record to maintain and a tricky tie in Ukraine first up he will probably stick with the likes of Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and John Terry - especially with the eastern Europeans still actively involved in the qualification process.

If there is any experimentation it is likely to come at Wembley against Belarus.

Other players looking to catch Capello's eye this weekend are the likes of Tottenham midfielder Tom Huddlestone, Arsenal winger Theo Walcott - fit again after a side strain - and Aston Villa forward Gabriel Agbonlahor.

All will be watched by Capello over the next three days, who also has a number of other decisions to make about various other players.

Portsmouth goalkeeper David James is expected to be recalled after injury forced him out of the last squad, which means one of Robert Green, Ben Foster or Paul Robinson will miss out.

If the England boss deems Walcott, who has not played this season, is fit enough to compete that could put Manchester City's Shaun Wright-Phillips' place under threat.

Spurs striker Peter Crouch will hope to retain his place so Agbonlahor may be waiting on withdrawals after the Ukraine match to get his chance.

Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe, who has dislocated fingers, trained today but the decision on whether to pick him could be taken out of Capello's hands if he is not fit enough enough to play against Bolton.

ITALY OUT TO COMPLETE QUALIFICATION

Italy football federation president Giancarlo Abete is hoping his national team can this weekend confirm their place at next year's World Cup finals.

The Azzurri go into Saturday's match against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin four points clear at the top of qualifying Group Eight.

The world champions need just a point away to second-placed Ireland to bag a place in South Africa.

"A positive result in Dublin would ensure qualification and would give the team confidence," Abete told Italian television station Rai.

The manner of Italy's six victories and two draws in their eight games has led to criticism in the media and from the fans.

But the unimpressive performances are no cause for concern for Abete just yet.

"Results are crucial," he said.

"Of course, it is nice to see good football too.

"But at this time, our priority is to get a result - and now we only have to think about qualifying."

Should the Azzurri lose in Dublin, Marcello Lippi's side would still have a chance to make amends - because they host Cyprus in their final qualifying game in Parma on October 14.

However, Abete has urged the Azzurri to finish the job in Ireland.

"It is better to arrive at the final match without any uncertainty," he said.

"We have to arrive at the game against Cyprus with qualification already in our pockets.

"We want to go to South Africa to honour the title as defending champions."

FITNESS RACE FOR LEDLEY

Wales remain hopeful Cardiff winger Joe Ledley will be fit to play some part in their forthcoming World Cup qualifiers against Finland and Liechtenstein.

The 22-year-old is set to undergo a scan on a hip injury that saw him play only 11 minutes as a substitute in the Bluebirds' 4-0 win over Watford on Saturday, having missed the midweek hammering of Derby altogether.

He will be assessed by the national team's medical staff when he meets up with the squad on Tuesday - as will his club-mate, Wales Under-21 full-back Adam Matthews, who has a bruised foot.

No additional players have been placed on standby, with any replacement for Ledley likely to step up from the Under-21 squad.

Wales take on Finland in Helsinki on Saturday in World Cup Qualifying Group Four before travelling on to Liechtenstein for next Wednesday's clash.

John Toshack's side lie fourth in the group and cannot qualify for next summer's finals in South Africa.

MARADONA TURNS TO LOCAL TALENT

Argentina coach Diego Maradona has added nine home-based players to his squad for the World Cup qualifying matches against Peru and Uruguay.

Boca Juniors striker Martin Palermo is called up after he scored a brace in a 2-0 friendly win over Ghana last week and the winner for his club team as they defeated Velez Sarsfield 3-2 last night.

Velez Sarsfield defender Nicolas Otamendi and Estudiantes playmaker Juan Sebastian Veron have also been included as expected, while Veron's club team-mate Enzo Perez is in after he made his debut in the Ghana game in Cordoba.

Colon goalkeeper Diego Pozo, Newell's Old Boys defender Rolando Schiavi, Boca duo Federico Insua and Luciano Fabian Monzon and Huracan midfielder Mario Bolatti are the other men to have been added to the squad.

Maradona has had to release Diego Milito, though, after the Inter Milan striker picked up a muscle problem in his right leg that will keep him out for a month.

That leaves the coach with 26 players to pick from for Saturday's match against Peru and the last qualifying game in Uruguay four days later.

Argentina squad: Sergio Romero, Mariano Andujar (Catania), Diego Pozo (Colon); Emiliano Insua (Liverpool), Fabricio Coloccini (Newcastle), Gabriel Heinze (Marseille), Pablo Zabaleta (Manchester City), Nicolas Pareja (Espanyol), Nicolas Otamendi (Velez Sarsfield), Rolando Schiavi (Newell's Old Boys), Luciano Fabian Monzon (Boca Juniors); Javier Mascherano (Liverpool), Luis Gonzalez (Marseille), Jonas Gutierrez (Newcastle), Angel Di Maria (Benfica), Pablo Aimar (Benfica), Federico Insua (Boca Juniors), Juan Sebastian Veron (Estudiantes), Enzo Perez (Estudiantes), Mario Bolatti (Huracan); Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Sergio Aguero (Atletico Madrid), Carlos Tevez (Manchester City), Gonzalo Higuain (Real Madrid), Ezequiel Lavezzi (Napoli), Martin Palermo (Boca Juniors).

DUGARRY PUTS BOOT INTO DOMENECH

Christophe Dugarry has launched a scathing attack on Raymond Domenech, accusing the France coach of having "done everything the wrong way" during his time at the helm.

Domenech has come in for strong criticism during Les Bleus' ongoing World Cup qualifying campaign, which has been marred by a surprise loss to Austria and unconvincing wins over the Faroe Islands and Lithuania.

The French have only an outside chance of pipping Group Seven leaders Serbia, whom they trail by four points, to the automatic qualification spot, while Domenech's men are still not assured of the play-off place that comes with finishing in second place, with Austria four points behind with two games to play.

The pressure has eased on the coach following last month's battling 1-1 draw in Serbia, but former France international Dugarry, a World Cup winner with Les Bleus in 1998, feels Domenech's reign has been a major disappointment.

"If we hadn't kept him on, we would only be asking ourselves one question now: how are we going to win the World Cup?" Dugarry told Le Parisien.

"Because of him, we are asking ourselves something else: how are we going to get to South Africa?

"It's sad. If I was in the place of Domenech, I would have done exactly the opposite of everything he's done since the beginning.

"He's done everything the wrong way."

Despite guiding the French to the final of the 2006 World Cup, where his side lost on penalties to Italy, 57-year-old Domenech's reputation hit rock-bottom just two years later when their Euro 2008 campaign ended in the group stage after failing to win a game.

He was nevertheless retained by the French Football Federation despite calls for his dismissal, and Domenech can ensure another stay of execution on Saturday should his side secure a play-off spot with an expected home win over the Faroe Islands.

France's qualifying campaign comes to a close against Austria at Stade de France four days later.

BENT UNFAZED BY ENGLAND SNUB

Darren Bent has vowed to keep trying to impress Fabio Capello after again being overlooked for England duty.

Capello saw the Sunderland striker put his side ahead against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday with a precision finish but preferred Gabriel Agbonlahor, Peter Crouch and Carlton Cole for England's final World Cup qualifiers against Ukraine and Belarus.

Saturday's goal was Bent's seventh in the Barclays Premier League this season, making him the leading homegrown goalscorer.

The 25-year-old told the Sunderland Echo: "I've given a good account of myself on Saturday but I've been knocking them in all season and have yet to get a call-up.

"I just have to keep knocking on the door with my performances for Sunderland. I'll just have to keep banging them in.

"I'm in good form, my confidence is high and I feel I can score goals at any level. This won't knock my confidence."

Bent paid tribute to boss Steve Bruce, who brought him to the Stadium of Light from Tottenham in the summer for a fee that could rise to more than £16million.

The former Charlton striker endured a difficult two years at Spurs and Bent believes he is reaping the rewards of his manager's faith.

"Everything seems to be flying in, which I always knew would happen if I got given games regularly," he continued.

"Since joining Sunderland it has been fantastic. The manager has shown real faith in me and hopefully I can keep repaying him.

"The manager worked so hard to get me here, I've joined a strong squad and the backing we're all getting from the supporters is fantastic."

FANS' CHIEF OUTRAGED BY NET DEAL

England supporters' spokesman Mark Perryman has blasted the decision to screen England's forthcoming World Cup qualifier in Ukraine on the internet.

Perryman called on the sport's governing bodies to prevent high-profile matches being forced away from traditional viewing platforms in future.

International football agency Kentaro, who were hired by the Ukrainian Football Federation to sell the television rights for Saturday evening's match, have acted following the collapse of Setanta, who held the rights to all of England's away qualifiers prior to entering administration earlier this year.

No mainstream broadcaster in the UK met the Ukrainian federation's asking price to screen the match in Dnipro, leading Kentaro to appoint digital sport specialist Perform to stream the match on the internet.

Perryman said: "I find it outrageous. FIFA and UEFA should make it a condition of entry to World Cup and European Championship qualifying campaigns that games must be sold only free-to-air, both to the home market and the away market.

"Where England fans are being sold short is not in this instance by their own FA, but by foreign FAs selling the game to the highest bidder, and in this instance it's an internet outfit.

"Arguably Ukraine away was the second-toughest of the away games of the campaign and they certainly didn't expect us to beat Croatia 5-1 in the preceding game and go through automatically.

"At 5.15 on a Saturday night, most of the England fans I know will not want to be sitting in front of a computer, even for an England game.

"A computer screen isn't really something you can sit around on the sofa with your family and mates, so I think the viewing figures are going to be low."

Last year, Perform stepped in when TV deals did not materialise for UEFA Cup matches featuring Manchester City and Tottenham, streaming the games live on a pay-per-view basis through the clubs' respective official websites.

James Richardson will present Perform's live coverage of Saturday's game on ukraineVengland.com, alongside former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, while David Pleat will be part of the commentary team.

While the presentation of the match promises to be professionally handled, Perryman warned that the increasing migration of sports to pay-TV and satellite platforms had damaged viewing figures, and fears the impact of extending that migration to the internet.

"There's certain businessmen concerned with world football who want us to pay for every game we can watch," he said. "There are lots of fans who don't want that to be the future.

"Every single sport that is transferred to pay-per-view or satellite, or this kind of development, narrows the audience, and that cannot be good for the future of the game."

While taking the match away from the traditional viewing platforms has been met with dismay by some, Kentaro managing director Peter Silverstone insists the deal represents a "natural progression" for the industry.

"The distinction between media is becoming ever-increasingly blurred, and your television screen is becoming your internet screen as well," Silverstone told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"Everyone in the UK is watching iPlayer, YouTube etc, we are watching an inordinate amount of content on the internet - 92% of the UK public have a broadband connection over two megabytes.

"People are also watching the television while being on the internet, Twittering etc, so we see this as a natural progression.

"I think in six months' time to a year, this conversation, this hype, will be moot, because we are ever-increasingly watching content on the internet, and an England match may be the first but it won't be the last."

Individual subscriptions for Saturday's match are limited to one million, and prices will rise on an incremental scale from £4.99 for those who sign up before Thursday, to £11.99 for those who subscribe on the day.

The subscription offer is not available on a commercial basis, meaning pubs will be unable to show the match live.

"The access is not for commercial subscription, the access is for individual subscription," Silverstone admitted. "We feel the quality will not be commensurate with the value they will pay.

"The stream is being streamed in 450 and 800 megabytes signal. This will not show well on a large plasma-screen television. It would be better to watch this on a computer screen.

"You can watch in cinemas, we have a deal with the Odeon cinema group across the UK. So the communal element for families and friends to watch the game together will be at the cinema."

Meanwhile, the English FA have reiterated the decision to broadcast the match online was taken solely at the discretion of their Ukrainian counterparts.

"The FA has had no authority over the decision to broadcast this match exclusively live on the internet," FA director of communications Adrian Bevington said in a statement.

"It is the host nation and their commercial agents who have the authority to sell the rights for away fixtures."

UNITED EXPLAIN FOSTER ABSENCE

Ben Foster was ruled out of England's World Cup double-header against Ukraine and Belarus with a chest injury.

The Football Association did not specify Foster's injury when the squad was released on Sunday night, but now United have confirmed the 26-year-old is being "investigated" for an injury sustained during Saturday's 2-2 draw with Sunderland, although not serious enough to prevent him completing the match.

Conspiracy theorists had suggested an injury was merely the excuse for omitting Foster when the decision had been taken on the grounds of form.

Foster has been blamed for Sunderland's second goal at Old Trafford, when Kenwyne Jones showed more strength in an aerial duel.

This came two weeks after what Sir Alex Ferguson described as a "difficult" afternoon against Manchester City, when Foster was blamed for two goals, losing the ball to Carlos Tevez for Gareth Barry's opener, then going down far too quickly for Craig Bellamy's second equaliser.

In between, Foster did keep a clean sheet at Stoke, although he was also left out of matches against Wolves and Wolfsburg as Tomasz Kuszczak was given an opportunity.

Foster's chances at United look like being severely limited after the international break as Dutch veteran Edwin van der Sar is due to return after breaking two fingers in a pre-season clash with Bayern Munich in July.

NEV: ENGLAND DAYS DRAWING TO A CLOSE

Gary Neville feels his England career is drawing to a close.

Although the Manchester United veteran has not completely ruled out pulling on the Three Lions once more, Neville would not be surprised if his 85th cap, won against Spain at Old Trafford in February 2007 proves to be his last.

The 34-year-old was called into Fabio Capello's squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Andorra last June and made the bench in the second of those games, without getting called into action.

And with Red Devils team-mate Wes Brown again named as Glen Johnson's deputy at right-back, Neville thinks Capello is now looking elsewhere.

"To be honest, I am not looking at an England return," he told United Review.

"The time has probably come for Glen Johnson or Wes Brown now. They have done very well and I think they are the first-choice players.

"It doesn't mean I would turn down the opportunity if it came but it is not something I am focusing on."

If Neville's theory proves correct, it would leave England's ninth most-capped player one adrift of Kenny Sansom, who tops the full-back chart.

The Bury-born star made his debut against Japan in 1995 and went on to feature in five major tournaments, including Euro 96, when he was an ever-present until being suspended for the semi-final defeat to Germany.

However, he missed the 2002 World Cup due to a broken metatarsal.

As Neville was not part of the United squad for Saturday's draw with Sunderland, his omission by Capello for next week's trip to Ukraine and the concluding World Cup qualifier against Belarus at Wembley four days later was hardly a surprise.

In fact, despite predictions of mass experimentation, Capello has not made many changes at all.

The absences of Jermain Defoe and Ben Foster have been put down to injury, a hand in the case of the Tottenham man, with Manchester United's goalkeeper ruled out with an unspecified problem.

It leaves Ashley Young as the only player to miss out without an obvious excuse, his despair mirroring the ecstasy of Gabriel Agbonlahor, who is recalled, along with experienced duo David James and Rio Ferdinand, who have both had their injury problems in recent times.

The introduction of Agbonlahor is the most noteworthy inclusion though.

With Defoe ruled out of Capello's plans on Friday, before he turned out as a substitute in Tottenham's draw at Bolton 24 hours later, and the timing of Michael Owen's latest injury ensuring he could not be considered, the Villa striker has been catapulted back into the reckoning.

A star at Under-21 level under Stuart Pearce - a key figure in Capello's coaching team - Agbonlahor started the friendlies in Germany and Spain last season, but seemed to have dropped out of the reckoning since, especially as Defoe has been in such fine form.

However, Capello has stressed more than once nothing is certain as far as his squad for South Africa is concerned and Agbonlahor will hope for a chance to catch the eye at some point over the next 10 days, although he must first get through tonight's encounter between Villa and City.

Capello will be at Villa Park, no doubt with his fingers crossed, given seven members of his 24-man squad will be involved before they meet up in the morning.

GATTUSO BACK FOR ITALY

Italy coach Marcello Lippi has named a 24-man squad for the World Cup qualifiers away to the Republic of Ireland on Saturday and at home to Cyprus four days later.

The Azzurri welcome back AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso, who missed last month's qualifiers against Georgia and Bulgaria with an ankle injury.

Genoa centre-back Salvatore Bocchetti and Fiorentina defender Alessandro Gamberini return to the national team while Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro has been included in the squad but will be unavailable for the match in Dublin through suspension.

The world champions go into Saturday's showdown four points clear of the Republic at the top of Group Eight, needing only a point to assure themselves of a place in next year's finals.

Italy end their qualifying campaign in Parma against Cyprus.

Italy squad: Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus), Morgan De Sanctis (Napoli), Federico Marchetti (Cagliari); Fabio Cannavaro (Juventus), Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus), Salvatore Bocchetti (Genoa), Alessandro Gamberini (Fiorentina), Fabio Grosso (Juventus), Nicola Legrottaglie (Juventus), Davide Santon (Inter), Gianluca Zambrotta (Milan); Mauro Camoranesi (Juventus), Gaetano D'Agostino (Udinese), Daniele De Rossi (Roma), Gennaro Gattuso (Milan), Claudio Marchisio (Juventus), Angelo Palombo (Sampdoria), Simone Pepe (Udinese), Andrea Pirlo (Milan); Antonio Di Natale (Udinese), Alberto Gilardino (Fiorentina), Vincenzo Iaquinta (Juventus), Fabio Quagliarella (Napoli) and Giuseppe Rossi (Villarreal).

MILITO OUT OF QUALIFIERS

Argentina striker Diego Milito is set to miss the World Cup qualifiers against Peru on Saturday and Uruguay next Wednesday through injury.

The Inter Milan player suffered a muscle strain in his right thigh during Saturday's 2-1 win over Udinese.

A statement from Inter read: "The Argentina striker has suffered a first degree strain in his right thigh.

"The club's medical staff has sent the necessary documents to the Argentina Federation in view of the next World Cup qualifiers."

Milito, who joined Inter from Genoa this summer and is the Nerazzurri's top scorer with five goals, could be sidelined for at least a month.

His absence is a blow for Inter and Argentina.

The Albiceleste go into Saturday's qualifier in Buenos Aires on a run of four defeats in the last five games, and currently lie in the play-off position in the South American zone.
