GUNNERS LEAVE IT LATE TO SINK ATLETICO

Andrey Arshavin came off the bench to net a late double as Arsenal beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 in the Emirates Cup.

The Russian, introduced in the second half, produced two superb finishes as the Gunners maintained their promising build-up to the new campaign.

There was also a welcome home return for Czech winger Tomas Rosicky, who had been out of action for some 18 months with a string of niggling injuries - and his availability for the build-up to the new campaign will be welcome boost to manager Arsene Wenger following the loss of Samir Nasri to a broken leg.

Wenger had named a mixed side, which included Vito Mannone in goal and Robin van Persie, last season's leading scorer, as captain with Cesc Fabregas one of 10 substitutes.

The Gunners have seen Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure depart for Manchester City, but eventually made their dominance pay when Arshavin slipped in a late winner.

The Spanish side, who started with former Gunner Jose Antonio Reyes in attack and were captained by ex-Manchester United forward Diego Forlan, could yet face Wenger's men again in competitive action next month in the Champions League play-off.

Following a period of appreciation for former England manager Sir Bobby Robson, who died on Friday, aged 76, Madrid midfielder Tomas Ujfalusi hit the post with an early far-post header, before Arsenal asserted control.

Rosicky's previous appearance at Emirates Stadium came back on January 26 2008, against Newcastle in the FA Cup, with the complicated knee and hamstring problem first ruling him out of the European Championships then all of the last campaign.

The pacy Czech wideman, though, looked sharp and had a well-taken effort ruled out for offside after seven minutes.

Emmanuel Eboue, who has been linked with a move to Fiorentina, looked dangerous down the other flank as the hosts pressed.

Following a flowing counter-attack, when the ball was switched across field to young Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey, van Persie fired a half-volley wide.

Atletico made a change just before the break, when Florent Sinama-Pongolle, who had spells in England with Liverpool and Blackburn, picked up an injury and was replaced by Maxi Rodriguez.

Eboue had switched flanks to the left, and forced a good reaction save from the Madrid keeper when he cut inside the penalty box.

Rosicky was given a well-earned breather, one of three players substituted at the start of the second half, replaced by youngster Fran Merida, with Gael Clichy and Jack Wilshere coming on for Armand Traore and Eboue respectively.

Arsenal started brightly as van Persie saw his clever back-heel cleared off the line by John Heitinga before Nicklas Bendtner fired over.

A slick move from 17-year-old Wilshere on the far by-line saw the ball pulled back for Ramsey, but the Wales midfielder shot straight at the keeper.

With 24 minutes to go, Arsenal made another triple substitution, with Fabregas replacing Ramsey, Eduardo coming on for Bendtner and Arshavin for van Persie.

The Gunners continued to press, with the impressive Wilshere the main outlet.

However, Rodriguez almost caught them out when he latched onto a loose ball and dashed into the right side of the Arsenal box only to drag his shot wide.

Substitute Borja Baston then tried his luck from 25 yards, with Mannone almost left red-faced as he spilled the wet ball just past the post.

The Gunners looked to have snatched a winner with just four minutes left when Fabregas lofted the ball over to the back post from the right, where Arshavin arrived to volley past Sergio Asenjo.

However, German Pacheco beat the offside trap, somewhat dubiously, to slot in an equaliser.

There was, though, just enough time for Arshavin to latch onto a poor backward header from Ujfalusi and tap the ball round the keeper before sliding it into the net from the tightest of angles.

Arsenal play Rangers tomorrow, with the Scottish champions having beaten Paris St Germain in the Emirates Cup opening game.

GUARDIOLA PLEASED WITH GALAXY TEST

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola was a happy man following his side's friendly victory over Los Angeles Galaxy, describing the match as a "good test" for his treble-winners.

Barca opened their three-match tour of America with a 2-1 win over the Galaxy in front of a huge crowd at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, youngsters Pedro Rodriguez and Jeffren scoring in either half to cancel out a trademark free-kick goal from former Real Madrid man David Beckham.

That was Barca's second win in three pre-season games and Guardiola was pleased with the way things went, saying: "We played a very good game against a team that is very strong physically.

"We've shown that our level is improving all the time. In the first half we had chance to have a better scoreline. It was a good test for us, against a team that has made us have a good game.

"I'm happy, I've seen new players, young players, we are recovering our tone after the holidays."

Among the new faces was recent signing Maxwell, while Rafael Marquez made his playing comeback after recovering from the knee injury he sustained during the Champions League semi-final first leg against Chelsea in April.

The Mexico defender played the first half-hour of the match before being replaced by Henrique, and Guardiola said of Marquez's return: "It's good news. He has recovered very well, he is not ready to play much more than 25 minutes, but he's done well, and is at a good level. I'm happy because Rafa is very important for us."

Marquez himself said on his club's website: "I'm fine, but taking it bit by bit. Today I played 30 minutes, maybe in the next game I can play a half."

VAN DER VAART SET FOR EXIT

Rafael van der Vaart is expecting to leave Real Madrid after learning he is not in new coach Manuel Pellegrini's plans for the season.

The Holland international only joined Real from Hamburg last summer, but has been deemed surplus to requirements following the big-money arrivals at the Bernabeu.

Chelsea have previously been linked with a bid for the midfielder, while former clubs Ajax and Hamburg are also reportedly keen.

Van der Vaart confirmed Pellegrini has told him he will be on the periphery this term and revealed Real want to recoup the 16million euros (£13.5m) paid to Hamburg 12 months ago.

"The coach told me I won't get much chance to play, so it's not an option to stay here," Van der Vaart told De Telegraaf.

"Real want to get my transfer fee back. I completely understand that clubs want to wait."

The 26-year-old would be prepared to return to Hamburg and admits his priority is to find a club where he will play regular first-team football.

He added: "Of course I am interested in HSV, but it's not the only option for me.

"The most important thing is that I will play at a new club."

BECKHAM ON TARGET IN FRIENDLY DEFEAT

David Beckham underlined his commitment to Los Angeles Galaxy after scoring in the Major League Soccer outfit's 2-1 pre-season defeat against Barcelona at the Rose Bowl.

The former England skipper curled home a free-kick on the stroke of half-time to level the scores after Pedro Rodriguez had fired Barca ahead, but Jeffren's 67th-minute effort sealed the victory for the Spanish side in front of over 93,000 fans.

Beckham has endured a difficult time since returning to the US after his loan move to AC Milan came to an end, and has twice been involved in heated confrontations with supporters.

The 34-year-old was again on the receiving end of cat calls and barracking from sections of the crowd in Pasadena last night, but his goal was nevertheless warmly received by the majority in the stands.

Asked whether he felt the goal would help him win the supporters back, Beckham replied: "Maybe, maybe not.

"If I did then great, if not, then I'm not going to lose any sleep.

"Like I said before, I always work hard for the team, I work hard for the manager and I work hard for the fans. Sometimes it's good enough, sometimes it's not.

"But I enjoyed my goal tonight.

"There's going to be the odd reaction from a minority of people.

"But 95%, 97% of the fans have been incredible."

GUILY SNATCHES DRAW FOR PSG

A 70th-minute equaliser from Ludovic Giuly salvaged a draw for Paris St Germain against Atletico Madrid in the Emirates Cup in London.

The former Barcelona forward levelled following a fine run and cross from Stephane Sessegnon to earn the French side their first point of the tournament.

PSG had narrowly lost to Rangers on Saturday and looked destined for a second successive defeat when Atletico took the lead.

The Spanish side, beaten by hosts Arsenal, started well and hit the bar through Cleber.

But the game's controversial moment came just before half-time when Sergio Aguero went down under a challenge from Albert Baning. Referee Alan Wiley pointed to the spot before showing the PSG man a red card.

Aguero dusted himself down to take the spot-kick himself to give the Spanish side the lead.

The spot-kick looked destined to decide the contest until Giuly popped up with 20 minutes left to grab a point for PSG.

But it was not enough to save them from the wooden spoon with Atletico in third place.

SPORTING STAND FIRM OVER MICHEL

Sporting Gijon insist Birmingham target Michel will not be leaving for less than his current value.

Michel has emerged as a target for Alex McLeish as he continues his attempts to strengthen his St Andrews squad.

Reports have claimed the Blues wanted to take the midfielder on trial before firming up their interest, but Sporting have refused that proposal.

And Sporting president Manuel Vega does not want to lose the 23-year-old in a cut-price deal, with Michel reportedly valued in the £2.5million bracket.

"Michel's exit will only be possible if an offer arrives for his value," Vega told the Spanish media.

Michel has come through the ranks at Sporting and was wanted by Bolton last year, but the Spanish side were reluctant to cash in at the time.

Birmingham will get the chance to take a closer look at Michel next weekend with Sporting due to visit St Andrews for a pre-season friendly.

BENITEZ - I WANT ALONSO TO STAY

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has reiterated he does not want to lose Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid.

Reports have indicated the Spanish giants are as keen as ever to sign the midfielder.

But Benitez, speaking after Sunday night's 3-0 pre-season friendly defeat against Espanyol, said: "He is our player and we want him to stay."

Former Chelsea forward Ben Sahar scored twice against a strong Liverpool team, captained by influential midfielder Steven Gerrard.

Alonso came off the bench for the closing minutes and it remains unclear whether he will start the season with Liverpool.

Benitez brushed off the setback of losing in a match which was set up to officially open Espanyol's new stadium.

The Spaniard added: "Nobody likes losing like that, but it's pre-season so it doesn't matter. I'm not worried about it."

Asked if Javier Mascherano, who has been linked with Barcelona, will leave, Benitez said: "No."

EMERY - VILLA IS 'PRICELESS'

Unai Emery has warned any club interested in David Villa that Valencia consider the striker "priceless".

The Spain international's future has been the subject of conjecture this summer, with Barcelona and Real Madrid both known admirers.

There is also reported interest from the Premier League, with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United linked with making bids.

However, Los Che remain determined to keep their star man and manager Emery has reiterated that Villa is committed to staying at the Mestalla.

Emery said: "Valencia want to keep David, but he also wants to stay with us. We don't want to sell him because he is priceless.

"Barcelona and Real Madrid have already shown an interest in him but David decided to come back to us.

"That was an unbelievable feeling for the club and we don't believe he will change (for Liverpool or Manchester United).

"He is willing to play for us and everything else is just speculation."

POCHETTINO PLEASED WITH STADIUM

Espanyol coach Mauricio Pochettino believes his club's new stadium could prove a massive plus for the team next season.

Espanyol enjoyed an impressive first run-out at their new home in Cornella-El Prat after seeing off Liverpool 3-0 in front of a sell-out crowd.

Luis Garcia put the Catalan side ahead after 19 minutes and summer signing Ben Sahar from Chelsea scored a second-half double to give the hosts a memorable triumph to mark the official opening of the stadium.

Espanyol won just eight and lost six of their 19 league games at their old ground at Montjuic last season as they finished in 10th place, but Pochettino feels it could be a different story next term if Sunday night's game is anything to go by.

"This ground could be an important base for us. It will be tough stadium for our opponents, but very positive for us because it is going to transmit a lot of energy," said Pochettino.

"The stands are right next to the pitch and the fans can really be heard, and this can help create a vibrant atmosphere. I hope this is a taste of things to come."

"We are all delighted to be here."

Regarding the win over a strong Liverpool side, Pochettino said: "I'm not focusing on the result but on the way we played and, in this, we are on the right track. The results now are incidental.

"What's really important is to continue improving and be ready for the game against Athletic (Bilbao, in their opening league match)."

RESINO CONTENT WITH EMIRATES TEST

Atletico Madrid coach Abel Resino was able to take away plenty of positives from his side's showing at the Emirates Cup this weekend even though they failed to win either of their matches.

Having been beaten 2-1 by hosts Arsenal on Saturday, Atletico were then held to a 1-1 draw by Paris St Germain despite the French side being reduced to 10 men before half-time in an incident that saw Sergio Aguero put the Rojiblancos ahead from the penalty spot.

Atletico may not have managed a victory in London, but Resino was far from disappointed with his side's two outings, saying: "This Emirates Cup has been important with regards to the work done and for being a good series of tests.

"The team played seriously and that's why I'm going away happy, in general terms. We've finished a cycle and from now on another one begins which has to be more intense as we look forward to the Champions League qualifiers."

He added: "We had scoring chances against PSG and that's important, bearing in mind that they start their league soon.

"Against PSG, for example, we also ended up playing with four lads from the reserves and that's very good for the club. Perhaps this detail is the best thing to take from the tournament, as they're lads who are more prepared than one might have thought initially."

ALONSO ENCOURAGED BY MEETING

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso is keen for his future to be sorted out one way or the other as the long-running transfer saga regarding a possible move to Real Madrid continues to drag on.

Alonso has been linked with Madrid for most of the summer but the Spanish giants have so far been unwilling to meet Liverpool's asking price for the Euro 2008 winner, which is believed to be in the region of £30million.

Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow met with Madrid executive director Jose Angel Sanchez in Barcelona on Sunday to discuss Alonso, with the Reds in the city for a friendly against Espanyol.

Alonso, who has handed in a formal transfer request, was unaware of the meeting but was quoted as telling Spanish newspaper AS: "It's reassuring to know that Madrid and Liverpool are talking seriously now.

"I decided a long time ago to stay on the margin of everything that was happening. My stance has been clear, as you all know. I'm a professional and I must wait for an agreement to be reached, but I hope it is resolved soon, for better or for worse."

Meanwhile, Purslow confirmed to AS that he had spoken with Sanchez but that no agreement had been reached, saying: "This (meeting) has only served to put our positions on the table. We need to continue talking."

SNEIJDER AGENT QUELLS INTER TALK

Wesley Sneijder's agent has rejected claims the Real Madrid midfielder is set to sign for Inter Milan.

Reports have suggested an agreement has been reached between the two clubs over a summer switch.

Sneijder's future is uncertain following the high-profile arrivals at Real during the current transfer window.

But Sneijder's agent, Soren Lerby, has dismissed claims that the Holland international is poised to join Inter.

"We have an understanding with Real Madrid that Wesley can't leave the club. And nothing has changed there," Lerby told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

BARCA EYE MESSI EXTENSION - REPORTS

Barcelona are working on a new contract for star man Lionel Messi, according to reports in Spain and Italy.

Both El Mundo Deportivo and Gazzetta dello Sport have suggested the Catalan club are to offer the 22-year-old 9.5million euros per year in an attempt to secure his long-term future.

Barca are also keen to raise the buyout figure in Messi's deal, which currently stands at 150million euros, to 300million euros.

The mooted new deal would see Messi overtake recent signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic as the best paid player at the Nou Camp.

The Argentina international has spent his entire career at Barcelona having come through the club's youth system.

He made his debut in 2004 at the age of 17 and has gone on to score 54 goals in 109 league appearances.

After starring in Barca's successful Champions League campaign last term he is widely viewed as the favourite for the Ballon d'Or and FIFA World Player of the Year awards.

ALTIDORE FUTURE REMAINS UNCLEAR

Villarreal striker Jozy Altidore is yet to discover whether he will be on his way out of the club this summer.

The United States international was widely tipped to be on the move during the transfer window, with a loan deal seemingly on the cards.

The 19-year-old has struggled to make an impact in Spain following a switch to El Madrigal last year.

He does, however, still have time on his side and is believed to be highly-rated at Villarreal.

He was shipped out to Xerez for the second half of last season, but a toe injury prevented him from making an appearance in their successful promotion-winning campaign.

Altidore is said to have attracted interest from Greece, France and England, but no official approach has been lodged as yet.

A Villarreal official has admitted that Altidore looks likely to be on the move in the coming weeks, but insists the destination of the youngster remains unclear.

"It is still not decided where Altidore will go," the official told skysports.com.

"We have some propositions and it is possible something will be decided by the end of the week."

REAL AGREE ALONSO FEE

Liverpool's Xabi Alonso is poised to sign for Real Madrid after the clubs agreed a fee believed to be £30million for the Spain international.

The end of a summer-long saga over the 27-year-old's future ended when Liverpool issued a short statement effectively bringing to a close his spell on Merseyside.

The statement read: "Liverpool Football Club this evening confirmed they had reached agreement for the sale of Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid, subject only to a medical. The terms of the deal will remain confidential and undisclosed."

But although Liverpool will not reveal the details of the deal, privately sources were maintaining that manager Rafael Benitez had got his own way over the fee.

It is believed that Madrid made another attempt to end the deadlock with an offer of £30m that will rise to £34m depending on Alonso's success over the first two years of what is believed to be a five-year contract.

Alonso had trained with his Liverpool colleagues this afternoon at the club's Melwood complex.

But as the Liverpool party headed for John Lennon airport and a charter flight to Norway for Wednesday's friendly with Lyn Oslo, Alonso was heading back to Spain.

Real Madrid issued a statement of their own, confirming he will have a medical on Wednesday.

Assuming all goes well, he will join his former Liverpool team-mates Alvaro Arbeloa - who moved to Real last week for £3.5million - and goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek at the Bernabeu.

Alonso and Dudek were part of the famous night in Istanbul when Liverpool lifted the European Cup after a penalty shoot-out victory over AC Milan.

Now only Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher remain at the club from the 18 players on the team sheet in Istanbul that night.

Alonso's departure has been a long and painful experience for Liverpool fans, who had taken the Basque midfielder to their hearts.

Benitez tried to sell him last summer in the complexities of his unsuccessful fight to sign Gareth Barry from Aston Villa.

Alonso did not want to go then, and has always felt that he was being forced out of the club to finance the Barry deal.

This summer it was Benitez who did not want to lose the player, who is believed to have told his manager on the final day of last season that he wanted to return to Spain.

From that point on, Madrid waged a persistent war to sign the player as they assembled a new squad under president Florentino Perez.

With the Alonso deal, Perez will have spent around £220m in two months on Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Raul Albiol, Esteban Granero, Arbeloa, Alvaro Negredo and Karim Benzema.

That haul is Madrid's response to Barcelona's historic treble of Champions League, La Liga and Spanish Cup.

But although Perez did not consider Alonso to be a player who 'will sell shirts', the Spain international has been almost as difficult to prise away from his club as Ronaldo.
