Bye-bye IPBOX

Today I have sold my IPBOX 900HD.

Here’s why:

- Very, very slow response to a remote. Compared to Dreambox the menu & zapping is extremely slow.
- Poor software support from DGstation and ABCom, I will explain below why.
- Lots of bugs, time setting problem, various PVR related problems and etc.
- Poor hardware support – it is very very weird and stupid to have one external – E-SATA port for external SATA hdd’s instead of just one lousy mounting bracket, and power source 5V/12V inside the box. And on top of that – lack of external USB hdd/flash drives support for PVR device.
- Weird hardware support – only SATA1 is supported for HDD, and only some brands and models, although almost all brands HDD’s have SATA1 support, but they don’t work with IPBOX. The official ABcom site have published an executive list of the few supported HDD’s.
- No CCcam support. Yes, there is a Incubus emu that can act like client for CCcam servers, but it is beta, unstable, freezes a lot, and it is in that state from 2-3 monts now.
- No Gbox support. You can connect to gbox servers using incubus or mgcamd, but you can reshare. In latest gbox clone for SH4 platform – mbox, gbox protocol support is broken.
- Lack of internal card reader. Come on – it is so hard to implement one. BTW – They have included internal card reader in the next version - 910HD, bur guess what – its does not work with some cards.
- Poor web interface, unable to just stream video to pc without third party mods.
- The divx player can't display subtitles, it is unstable and unreliable.
- More to come - The CI slots does not work with some of the most common modules on the market, they work (what a surprise) only with some specific chipsets CI modules.
- The 900HD has no FAN, the 910HD has one.
- When using HDMI output - unable to set screen ratio to 16:9 full (zoom), only 16:9 pillar box (squashed) available.
- Noise on screen, during writing on flash when using HDMI.
- Lousy 256 color graphics menu and fonts. Is this a HD box or what? Look bad on my 42" TFT.
- Tired of waiting for long expected promised Enigma 1 image from Slovak retailers ABCom, some third party group (SIF team) has released an unofficial Enigma 2 image based on other unofficial image for Kathrein 910 box.  Oh, yes – not a joke
- This image prove that ipbox hardware is capable to run and handle enigma, but nothing more.
- The image is unstable, it is nightmare to install and support, only the hardcore enthusiasts can enjoy this.

In conclusion – Despite that IPBOX has a great, powerful hardware – unfortunately there is no good software (and i doubt that will ever be) for this platform. Even when ABcom finally release the enigma1 – it will be like the old mutant boxes – not the real thing.

See me soon in dreambox 800/8000 section. 

PS. Hajj – Sell the damn thing already…..

Someone's Pissed?

I like the ipbox, ive got the 9000HD but ive got fed up of waiting for decent software and bought a DM800HD.

much better software, but the hardware aint great, No CAM slot. Timeshift isnt great, Remote isnt really designed for all the features. (try telling your missus to press a button twice or do a long press????).
Could do with a few more buttons maybe?

I think once an Official release of Enigma is out for IPbox/Cuberevo it will be a different Story (Hopefully?).

STOP panicking pple !
Yes - ipbox is lacking of software support at the moment BUT it gets better and better ... and is anyway better machine than dm800!
I got the 9000HD -its not my main box - i got dm7025 as well -
I have incubus installed and is running OKish with Sifteam 8873 and also installed E2 and it was fantastic, proper E2! I really cant wait for next E2 release...and it should not be long!
that my view anyway...

I agree with most of what you wrote arken, but i'm keeping my 900HD for now.

Still have some hope it will have Enigma, but in case it wont, it is a good HD box anyway as long as you use it like a regular box, not a linux one. PVR works fine with an older image, and you still can connect to newcamd server with Mgcamd.

It aint as powerfull and functional as a DM, but hey, it's almost half price!!!

Arken, I agree with everthing you said except "- When using HDMI output - unable to set screen ratio to 16:9 full (zoom), only 16:9 pillar box (squashed) available."

For me it is fantastic, if the source is 16:9 (Movies and EPL) it is outputed as 16:9 if the source is 4:3 it is outputted on hdmi as pillar box, so always zero distortion. This is done automatically if I select "Pillar box" in the display menu.

I am using the 910HD for 2 weeks now and I must say, the hardware is very impressive.
Sure, there's still a lot of work to be done on the SW side but that was also the case when the DM7000 was launched.

The fact, this box has great hardware and linux, will draw a lot of programming teams toward this box.

I cannot see why I should favour a receiver that has DVI output that needs to be "converted" to HDMI in stead of true HDMI output.

Give it a month or two and you will see the progress that has been made by the SIF-, CLI and NLB teams.

I have been using IPbox 900HD for over a year - software is still buggy at times depending on what you need to do. Things have come a long way tho. I am not necessarily waiting 4 Enigma. I am not that interested in CAMs and all of that Jazz. HD is good, Diseqc 1.2 is working, Divx - is SoSo (must do better). I am happy so far. WebTV never worked 4me. I am still willing to keep my box. Other boxes out there that does an awe-ful lot more than any of these boxes - typically the E...vox range of cable Boxes - no need to bash the IPbox tho - guess that one day - Divx will come good and IPTV will be sorted.

This Cuberevo/IPBOX HD for regular users with no need for scene related software, the box is actually quite good.

as developer and mod maker i can only say ipbox has improved over the months and with assistance from all the users, DGStation has managed to fix a lot of issues and add requests, as they do improve the box with regular updates.
they do make some mistakes, but in general it has good support.

reading forums on DMM issues and what they encounter, and also reading Kathrein forums, ipbox users are in a better position in some cases.

Additionally with Tideglo and his E2 firmware adaption box is only getting better.. for those oldies with Enigma experience, this is the way forward..
For all the other not so demanding users, using box for regular use with a original card, the box works just fine for them.

I stay with DGStation for now, and would probably not be getting any DMM hardware based product for a long time.
Yes, Enigma2 is a original DMM software product, and might be very much closed source soon, but with the opensource based images out, this is a DMM problem, not ours.

Originals are good, but inventions normally stop there for those that made the original. Thats why we need ipbox and other boxes with different functionality.

other boxes are made for the general public and with a easier interface, which makes them sell just as well, just only for "regular" use.

webtv is working,
http://www.sat-universe.com/showthread.php?t=106963&page=2
mediaplayer on sifteam e2 play divx very well, no lips sync.

dm800; c ant play divx directly from usb or internal hdd, he need to transcode :nana:
With my setup - I was not able to configure IPBOX with static IP address. You See - I use BT Powerline adapter which carries the network signals over the MAINS electrical cable. The Powerline adapters does not easily support Static IP. DHCP is supported - but E2 does not seem to support DHCP. This is why I continue with SifT-8873 image. I get no network with E2 image and do not want to run network cable in my living room. E2 will have to wait until DHCP is fully sorted out - that is a major problem for me. All other images has DHCP working except E2. Due to Network issues - WebTV is not working 4-me. Will debug that sometime.

My CubeRevo Mini has a fan, and incubus never freezes. Its also normal speed responsive, not fast but not slow.
Also the dreambox probably is better, but look at the price !

Happy now

Tossed the Cuberevo , bought a Dreambox 800, the difference is night and day.

I quickly uploaded Nabilo .8 using the webpage (no cables, no usb stick, no telnets) and then loaded the cams from the Nabilo interface.

Now I have a machine that zaps twice as fast, a video player where the video is synced with audio, stable, better epg, lots of customization from the front end and most of all an intuitive interface that is spouse friendly.

I supose it depends on how capable of using your brain you are, if your a retard like most of the people moaning - you shouldnt have bought the box in the first place. The box does the job fine, i can play all series i download from the internet and watch Sky HD channels with no problems.
