Has the drive been used in a PC before ?
If so it may be better to format it to ext3 pn a PC with a live bootcd such as gparted.
You could always see if another image will format it i just suspect there is a windows partition on that drive the box can not deal with.

You may be able to figure out how to manually partition & format a drive thru telnet by following relevant parts of the How To Boot Your DM800 From A USB Stick thread. Pretend the hard drive is a USB stick.
You could also try googling any of the thousands of Linux websites that also cover partitioning & formatting (initializing).
