"He was out of control," said a witness. Rene
E. Fernandez, 45, is accused of causing life-threatening injuries while
intoxicated after slamming his SUV into a car driven by Edwin Collier,
85. Both Collier and his wife ended up with those life-threatening
injuries, but Fernandez was barely hurt, and walked around the scene
smiling while others rushed to help the Colliers. Mr. Collier is a
retired Montgomery County, Md., District judge, and presided over
"thousands" of drunk driving cases -- including one in 1998, when he
spared Fernandez jail time on his second DUI in a three-month period.
Fernandez is again being represented by the attorney who helped him in
1998. (Washington Post) ...That's the nice thing about DUI cases:
there's usually a chance to do it over and get it right.
