Arsene Wenger has given Arsenal a massive boost by rejecting an ambitious bid by Bayern Munich to instal him as their new manager.

Sportsmail can reveal that Bayern have been pursuing the Gunners boss for nearly a month and finally made their move by inviting him to name his own terms to replace the outgoing Jurgen Klinsmann. The approach came from Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz

Rummenigge and included a pledge of enough transfer funds to compete for the world's top names.

But in a stance that underlined his quest to take Arsenal back to the top after just one trophy in four years, Wenger declined.

Bayern's directors met last night to decide on the timing of Klinsmann's departure, halfway through a two-year contract.

A 1-0 home defeat by Schalke on Saturday has left Bayern lagging behind the Bundesliga's top two, Wolfsburg and Hertha Berlin.
