ALAN SHEARER needs a miracle to save Newcastle from the drop.

The Toon are three points adrift of safety after Mark Viduka, Michael Owen and Oba Martins missed golden chances to bury Portsmouth.

Shearer, whose side visit Liverpool on Sunday, blasted: “All three strikers had chances and missed and we paid the price for that. I am disappointed we haven’t taken all three points.

“I asked for a response and they gave me that.

“But we have created enough chances to win.

“It’s ironic that I wanted all three strikers on the pitch together and all three had one chance each.

“You would expect one to score — but they haven’t. We all go home looking at those chances and think they should have gone in.”

Boss Shearer’s four games in charge have yielded just two points and only one goal.

Big Al added: “It’s proving difficult to win and score goals.

“I pushed people up so you would expect they would have chances. I don’t know if it will be a good or bad point.

“Four games is a hell of a long time. There will be twists and turns. I don’t know what the points total will be. No one does. We are relying on other people. Results went for us at the weekend and it will be tense.

“We have to still be in there fighting.

“Liverpool away will be difficult — it doesn’t get any tougher — but we will have a go.

“I was happy with the chances we created but just unhappy that we didn’t take them. I still believe we will be in the Premier League.”

Portsmouth are still seven points above the Toon with four games left. Caretaker-boss Paul Hart said: “I’m satisfied with a point. They tried to throw the kitchen sink at us but we remained disciplined.”

Hart’s chances of staying on beyond this season were boosted when Pompey executive chairman Peter Storrie ruled out a move for former director of football Avram Grant.
