Virgin, Sky legal battle a year away

Virgin and Sky will not go head-to-head in court for another year, meaning cable viewers could be without the likes of Sky One for some time to come.

Chancellor of the high court Andrew Morritt confirmed a timetable that will see a pre-trial hearing taking place in November, a further exchange of documents in March 2008, followed by a trial several months later. A judgment would not likely be reached until 2009.

A number of Sky's channels - including Sky One, Sky News and Sky Sports News - were dropped from the Virgin lineup in March after both parties failed to agree terms for a new carriage contract. Virgin is expected to hit back tomorrow (Thursday) by confirming plans to launch its own sports news channel in partnership with Setanta Sports.
