Virgin looks for corner to turn

Analysts are anticipating a partial restoration of fortunes when Virgin Media unveils its quarterly statistics on Wednesday. The cablenet is expected to reveal a loss in the region of 31,000 customers compared to the 70,000 who departed in the spring quarter. Citigroup says the next quarter will see an increase of around 45,000 subscribers.

Virgin is returning its emphasis to broadband, with tests of 50 Mbps currently underway, amid an estimated growth of 60,000 homes.

The company is currently engaged in a lengthy court dispute with Sky over the carriage of the broadcaster’s basic channels. Virgin has put forward Setanta Sports as an alternative to Sky, offering its premium sports channels free to big basic subscribers, however it has emerged Setanta is also planning to offer Setanta Sports News over Sky’s DTH platform.
