UPC Austria starts analogue switch-off

February 29, 2016 10.54 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

The largest Austrian cable operator UPC Austria will commence analogue switch-off this spring.

Kick-off will be in southern Niederösterreich and the regions Wiener Neustadt, Baden and Reichenau from April 5, 2016. The transition will take place gradually from region to region and will be completed with Vienna and surroundings in early 2017. The timetable and further information for customers is provided by UPC Austria on a special website.

The other Austrian cable operators also want to close down analogue distribution this year. The move is accompanied by an information campaign for affected households initiated by the telco and broadcaster department of Austria’s Chamber of Trade.

UPC Austria currently offers 230 digital TV channels of which 70 are provided in HD quality. Cable radio will also only be available in digital in future; more than 70 digital radio stations are currently carried by UPC Austria.

Swiss sister company UPC Cablecom completed analogue switch-off in July 2015. German cable operator Unitymedia, a Liberty Global subsidiary like UPC Austria and UPC Cablecom, has commenced analogue switch-off in July 2015. In the second half of 2016, Unitymedia wants terminate analogue cable TV in the first town a part of a trial.
