Ukrainian cable carriage row erupts
July 24, 2012 10.04 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Ukraine’s controversial new must-carry rules have already resulted in a row between a channel and leading cable operator.

Kommersant reports that Triolan has refused to distribute TVi after initially citing technical reasons for its removal.

TVi is distributed to around 8 million households, of which 200,000 have up until now been served by Triolan, via cable and DTH.

Although TVi says it has no intention of going to court over the matter as it unlikely to get a fair hearing, it has urged its viewers to take legal action against Trolian.

Earlier this month Ukraine’s National Council on Television and Radio introduced new must carry rules requiring operators to offer a ‘benefits’ package consisting of all 32 channels licensed for digital broadcasting.

Triolan is the second largest cable operator in Ukraine after Volia, claiming over 200,000 subscribers in 10 cities at the end of 2010.
