Ukraine addresses satellite TV hacking

November 8, 2016 22.36 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Media Group Ukraine (MGU) is looking into the possibility of broadcasting simultaneously on two satellites in order to counter the outside interference from hackers its channels have suffered this year.

To that effect, it has begun tests on Eutelsat 9B at 9 degrees East.

MGU’s channels, which are distributed by Astra 4A at 4.8 degrees East, suffered unprecedented levels of hacking during Euro 2016, when viewers were deprived of the opportunity to watch the semi-finals.

The company says it has repeatedly asked the police, regulator and security bodies to investigate the situation and take appropriate action. As nothing has been forthcoming, it decided to consider the possibility of simulcasting.

MGU is a media holding company that manages System Capital Management Group’s TV and new media projects. Its assets include the national FTA channel Ukraine; NLO, a channel aimed at young viewers; and the thematic channels Football 1, Football 2 and an HD version of the latter.
