Western Europe is enjoying a spectacular boom in the sales of Ultra-HD TVs. According to data from analysts at GfK, the UK market is seeing the greatest enthusiasm for Ultra-HD.

In the 12 months to August 15th, sales have topped 509,000 units. The previous 12 months saw just 56,000 sold. Germany’s enthusiasm for Ultra-HD is almost as great, with 481,000 units sold (74,000 in the previous 12 month period).

French buyers are also buying into the concept, with 426,000 units sold (67,000). Italy, a smaller market, is also buying into Ultra-HD (242,000 units sold, compared with just 19,000 in the previous year).

The number emerged during an SES and DTG-sponsored event in London on September 29th, when GfK analyst Nick Simon told delegates that last year’s sales of 50” and over displays represented a 26 per cent share of the overall market in terms of value. But that percentage, this year, has rocketed to 34 per cent and is growing fast helped by the “rapidly increasing affordability of Ultra-HD displays”.

Simon says that average screen sizes being bought would soon be 40” with a shift occurring towards 50” as prices fall. By 2017, he said that annual sales of Ultra-HD sets would exceed 3 million.
