Thuringia joins German local TV portal on Astra

May 5, 2014 14.25 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

Lokal-TV-Portal Thüringen (bmt)The first local TV channels from Thuringia have launched on the HbbTV-based German local TV portal on Astra (19.2° East), enabling DTH satellite households to receive local television from the federal state.

The OTT offering which is financially supported by local media authority Thüringer Landesmedienanstalt (TLM) currently contains Südthüringer Regionalfernsehen (SRF), Salve.TV and tv.altenburg. Further local TV channels will be added soon.

“To make local television available to new viewers and thereby increase the channels’ technical reach is an important task of TLM. We are therefore excited about this new distribution possibility,” TLM director Jochen Fasco said in Erfurt.

The local TV portal which launched on January 1, 2013, and is stored on slot 99 in the channel list of many reception devices enables local TV broadcasters throughout Germany to make their linear TV channels and catch-up services available to DTH households.

For reception, a connected TV set or set-top-box is required compliant with interactive multimedia standard HbbTV and hooked up to the internet. The reason: The content is not distributed to the TV screens via satellite, but through the internet.
