I am a satellite-tv watching hobbyist for the last 20 years. And I am sorry to say that that there is still no such thing as the "BEST DVB-Player". Some are better than others according to individual's prefereces, needs & tastes. In its early days (v. 1.xx), ProgDVB ruled.
The best ever player was developed during 2004-2006,namely,AltDVB. Most unfortunately, its programmer ALTXRO just disappeared from the DVB scene. Had he stayed with us (his fans) for another 2-3 years, we could have a player par excellence.
At the moment, DVBviewer has less appeal for those who just want to use it on PC. Its GUI without an inbuilt channels list is one big inconvenience. On weak signals it just crashes, while other players go on... no matter what is the state of video being displayed. Again it components are divided....you have a channel scanner, then a channel list...then again a channel editor etc.
ProgDVB' stability has always been an issue. Its mechanism of channels data base, tranponders way of storage & incompatibility with many popular decoders is pain in the ass!
DVBDream, is better of the above two....but its handling of diseqc 1.1 is defective. Again this has a very close range of codecs you can use with it. EPG is simply ridiculous. By comparison DVBViewer has the best EPG functioning.
ALTXRO....we cannot forget you!
