August 07 2012, 6:17 PM - PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom) is waiting to hear from the ISS - Reshetnev Company about its unsuccessful launch of its US$200 million Telkom-3 Satellite on Monday.

“We simply heard that the launch of the Telkom-3 Satellite failed, caused by a Breeze-M rocket malfunction. We now await the official notice from ISS Retshesnev in Russia,” Slamet Riyadi, a spokesman for the state-run telecommunications company, said as quoted by kompas.com on Tuesday.

The satellite was launched from Russia’s Baikonur Cosmodrome space launch facility in Kazakhstan on Monday local time and was reported missing before it could reach orbit.

The Breeze-M is a Russian-made upper-stage launch vehicle designed for inserting large payloads into the geosynchronous orbits (i.e., those that match the earth’s rotation) that are favored by communications satellites.

According to NASAspaceflight.com, the Telkom-3 satellite was launched with the Ekspress-MD2 satellite on top a Proton-M rocket carrying the Breeze-M as an upper stage.

The Russian Federal Space Agency, Roscosmos, said in a press release that there was a problem with the Breeze-M rocket, declining to say if the satellites reached orbit.

Separately, the Russian International News Agency, RIA Novosti, reported that none of the satellites reached orbit, saying that several previous satellite launches failed due to problems with the Breeze-M booster.

A similar failure occurred in 2011 with the launch of an Ekspress-AM4 Satellite.

The launch of Telkom-3 was first postponed in mid-2011 to late 2012, before Reshetnev and Telkom rescheduled the launch for Aug 7.

It was the first time Telkom worked with a Russian company. The launch of Telkom-2 was done by France’s ArianeSpace in November 2005.

The Telkom-3 carried 24 Standard C-band 36 MHz transponders, 8 Ext C-band 54 MHz transponders, 4 36 Mhz transponders and 6 Ku-Band 54 Mhz transponders.

The Standard C-band covers Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries, while the Ext C-band covers Indonesia and Malaysia and the Ku-Band covers Indonesia specifically.

Twenty of the 42 transponders on the Telkomk-3 were intended for commercial lease, while the remainder were reserved for the Telkom Group.(fzm)
