Telefunken and Grundig brands to disappear
09.53 Europe/London, August 29, 2011 By Robert Briel

Just as the German consumer electronics fair IFA 2011 is set to open in Berlin, SM Electronic has announced it is abandoning the Telefunken and Grundig brands for its set-top boxes.

According to the German trade publication Digital Insider, SM Electronic (SME)’s parent company Gigaset has decided to drop the iconic brand names and will only use the Skymaster brand. The two trade marks will be phased out by the end of the year.

Apart from the brand Skymaster which has been established in retail, consumer and building markets for 20 years, the company also distributes receivers and set top boxes, as well as other multimedia and telecommunications accessories of the brand Telefunken under a licence.

In addition, SM Electronic supplies Grundig television reception equipment exclusively to the specialised trade.

A spokesperson for the company also confirmed that 100 of the 150 jobs will go at its Stapelfeld establishment.
