TDF launches terrestrial Restart
July 4, 2012 07.38 Europe/London By Julian Clover

French transmission company TDF has launched a new ‘restart’ service on channels operated by the public broadcaster France Télévisions.

Running between 20.00 and midnight, viewers joining a programme late can choose to view the show from the beginning by pressing the Blue button. The HbbTV system of course requires the viewer to connect their TV to the Internet.

“We are convinced that Restart will meet a real need felt by DTT viewers. Backed by our staff’s development work we can now provide an end-to-end service for our channels from content uptake through to provision of the app for viewers with a DT connected TV”, says Franck Langrand, Director of the TV Division of TDF.

TDF carries out the live uptake of content from France Télévisions, extracts the programmes to be offered in Restart, codes them in formats compatible with HbbTV 1.1 and HbbTV 1.5, archives them on its Content Delivery Network, signals the service through DTT, and delivers the programmes on demand through the CDN.

Further services are planned including video on demand, catch-up TV and dedicated event channels.
