TDF and SES eye Romania
09.21 Europe/London, October 5, 2011 By Chris Dziadul

Both France’s TDF and the satellite operator SES have confirmed their interest in playing an active role in the transition to digital broadcasting in Romania.

Speaking at the International Digital Forum organised by the Association for Digital Communications in Bucharest and quoted by ZF, Helmut Egenbauer, head of TDF’s operations in Central Europe, said that while the company is still interested in participating in the process “it all depends on the legal authorities and conditions to be determined by the government.”

These include who will build the infrastructure and own the towers and if the latter can be rented.

SES’s Sybren De Vries meanwhile said that the use of satellites “would be an effective long-term solution” for the transition to digital broadcasting in Romania and that if the conditions were right the company would be “happy to sign a contract today.”

Back in August last year Romania took the decision to put the ASO date, scheduled for 2015, back by three years.

In doing so, it stopped a DTT tender then taking place dead in its tracks.
