Syrian-based satellite TV station Al-Rai closes down

by Andy Sennitt.

The Syrian-based satellite TV station Al-Rai, which was fiercely anti-American and became a mouthpiece for the late Libyan dictator Moammar Gaddafi in the final months of his regime, has closed down. This was confirmed on Tuesday by the station’s owner Mishan al-Jabouri.

The station also served as a mouthpiece for the Iraqi opposition, and Mr Al-Jabouri, a former Iraqi parliamentarian in exile, said he decided to dismantle the station because the American troops have withdrawn from Iraq and the relationship between Syria and Iraq has improved. According to Mr Al-Jabouri, it’s therefore no longer appropriate to have a Syrian TV station acting as a mouthpiece for Iraqi opposition figures.

The station became widely known after it started broadcasting Gaddafi’s speeches, and following his death it was used by his daughter, Aisha, ‘as a voice for the Libyan opposition’.
