Swisscom debuts Quing home automation
By Jamie Beach December 3rd, 2012

Switzerland’s biggest telco has today unveiled a major new smart home system called Quing, combining building automation, security and energy management in one package.

Regardless of their location, customers can use an app or go online to control their electrical devices and energy consumption and keep an eye on their homes using sensors and cameras.

The Swisscom Quing Home package includes a Home Panel for controlling everything, a camera with night-vision capability, a motion sensor, a door/window contact detector, two adapters, a remote control and a router to ensure a secure Quing Home network.

Customers will be charged a one-off fee of CHF 689 (US$ 744), plus a monthly subscription of CHF 19 per month for the basic package.

A second “Professional” package will be introduced at the start of 2013, which will send alarm notifications directly to a professional alarm centre.

The system can also be expanded with additional devices and sensors, all capable of sending alerts to the user via email or SMS in the event of an undesired incident, and requires only a DSL broadband connection.

If the DSL connection fails then an alternative connection is automatically established via the mobile network. All data is backed up in a Swisscom data centre.

Swisscom plans to gradually expand the range of devices and sensors available for the Quing system, including the release of controllers for heating systems as well as water and smoke alarms in early 2013.
