Spanish channels take action over DTT licences
May 2, 2013 08.36 Europe/London By Robert Briel

UTECA, the Spanish association of commercial broadcasters, has filed an appeal against the government’s decision to withdraw the DTT licneces of nine channels.

The Spanish government has decided to follow an order of the country’s suopreme court to suspend the licences of four private broadcasters, Mediaset, Atresmedia, Vocento and Unidad Editorial. As a result, a total of nine TV channels would have to leave the airwaves.

According to the judgment of the supreme court, the previous socialist government failed to comply with Spanish media law, which entered into force in May of that year, to assign licenses to owners of “additional channels” in the DTT “without the conducting public competition “, as required by law

However, private broadcasters understand “the problem” raised by the court’s decision was due to “errors and shortcomings in the functioning of the Administration” and should be solved to ensure the continuation of the nine channels involved.
