July 10, 2013 11.17 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Madrid and Barcelona account for 73.4% of installed fibre access in Spain, according to a new report published by the regulator CMT.

Based on data collated in 2012, it shows that Madrid (32.5 lines per 100 inhabitants), Barcelona (29.85) and Guipúzcoa (28.3) had the highest fixed broadband penetration, with the national average being 24.9 lines.

In terms of technology, xDSL accounts for the majority of broadband in Spain, with a penetration of 19.3 lines per 100 inhabitants, compared to 4.7 lines per 100 inhabitants for cable.

The number of installed fibre-optic lines was meanwhile 3,951,051, or 72% more than a year earlier.
