From David Del Valle in Madrid
October 12, 2015

Spain has the largest number of FTTH subscribers in the EU, with 1.89 million connections.

A report from the consultancy firm Analysys Mason reveals that FTTH in Spain has grown by 153 per cent over the last year, with figures corresponding to the first quarter of 2015, with Telefonica being the top provider in terms of FTTH, with 1.56 million, 18.7 per cent of the total in Europe. The second is Orange France with 638,000 clients.

Most FTTH connections per capita is Sweden with 1.48 million subs. Far from Spain and Sweden are France (with 1.06 million clients), Holland (with 850,000), Portugal (672,000) and Norway (with 607,000). Germany (with 116,000 clients) and the UK (with 66,000) are not doing it well in FTTH due to their bet on HFFC where they have 5.8 million and 4.5 million, respectively.

Spain is the only EU country with over 10 million FTTH passed homes, according to FTTH Council. Operators hope to reach 20 million homes by the end of the year. The average FTTH speed is 9.7 Mbps, up 22 per cent year on year, more than in France and Italy, according to a report from Akamai.
