Madrid had the highest broadband penetration rate in Spain at the end of last year, according to data published by the industry regulator CMT.

Claiming 24.7 lines per 100 inhabitants, it was just ahead of Catalonia (23.6) and the Balearics Islands (23.2), with the lowest rate being found in Murcia, Galicia and Extremadura (10).

The average penetration rate stood at 19.8 lines per 100 inhabitants, while the fastest growth was seen in Aragon (25.8%).
The highest cable broadband penetration was meanwhile in Asturias (nine lines per 100 homes), followed by the Basque Country (8.9) and Cantabria (8.3).

The national average was double the four per 100 lines only a year earlier.
The take-up of xDSL, on the other hand, was highest in Catalonia (22 lines per 100 inhabitants), followed by Madrid (21.7).
