SeeAfrika DTH platform launched

March 9, 2015 11.15 Europe/London By Robert Briel

Canal Holding has launched SeeAfrika, the first pan-African TV satellite bouquet in Benin.

SeeAfrika features 70 national and international channels and is available in Benin, Niger and Burkina Faso. The satellite DTH playform has selected WinMedia for its end-to-end solutions to prepare, plan and playout more than 70 on-air channels.

“Canal Holding has been using WinMedia innovative TV solutions for the preparation, scheduling and playout of its African on-air channels. WinMedia applications are highly flexible and have a scalable architecture, which are critical for our operations. Not to mention their ease of use,” said Issa Salifou, CEO at Canal Holding.

The deployed solutions feature an array of WinMedia traffic tools, which allows Canal Holding to quickly ingest, prepare and preview their playlists and add any number of upper/lower third graphics using the intuitive WinPublish module. The programming is then sent to the fully redundant playout system, set up in Globecast’s technical operation center in Paris.

Each playout server can simultaneously broadcast up to four different channels in HD and/or SD formats along with the relevant CGs that project the style and individual look of each program and channel. From there, the channels are sent via satellite to a teleport for uplink onto the satellite platform.

This remotely controlled solution enables Canal Holding to run their channel playout operations from their own premises, controlling costs and enabling them to be completely hands-on with their channel.

“We are very proud to be working with Canal Holding on such an ambitious project,” said Pascal Cima, CEO at WinMedia Europe, Africa and the Middle East. “Canal Holding and WinMedia’s common strive for innovation ultimately benefits the audience.”
