Satellite blow for Russia
August 7, 2012 07.41 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

The launch of the Russian satellites Express-MD2 and Telkom-3 has ended in failure.

The former, which was commissioned six years ago and had a payload produced by Alcatel Alenia Space Italia, was due to provide digital broadcasting services across Russia.

Telkom was meanwhile ordered by Indonesia. The cost of losing the two satellites has been estimated at between R5-6 million (€127,000-152,000).

Last year Russia lost another satellite (Express-AM4) that was due to provide digital broadcasting services in the country.
