Russian Kosmos TV under threat
09.06 Europe/London, December 13, 2011 By Chris Dziadul

The Moscow-based MMDS operator Kosmos TV has found itself in a dispute over the launch of 4G services in the city.

Kommersant reports that Kosmos TV, which is jointly owned by AFK Sistema and the Russian Television and Radio Broadcasting Network (RTRS), is taking legal action in a dispute with the State Commission for Radio Frequencies (SCRF).

The latter recently awarded a licence to Scartel (which uses the brand name Yota) to operate 4G services on frequencies currently used by Kosmos TV.

It also plans to grant four more licences for the same frequencies.

This effectively means that Kosmos TV, which currently has around 35,000 subscribers and a 1% share of the Moscow pay-TV market (4% of digital TV) will no longer be able to provide services.
