Romania launches football rights probe

July 31, 2014 10.59 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

The Romanian Competition Board (CC) has launched an investigation into the sale of TV rights for Liga 1, the country’s top football league.

Quoting a statement by CC, Mediafax reports that this follows a complaint about the award, which was made to the Malta-registered Intel Sky Broadcast Ltd for a period of five years.

The CC adds that it has already conducted an investigation into the sale of broadcasting rights by the Professional Football League (LPF) for 2008-2011 to a consortium of Antena 1 and RCS&RDS.

It was completed in 2011 following the acceptance of commitment by the LPF.

It also notes that in this instance it is interested in obtaining information and opinions from third parties, including competitors and customers.

Under the terms of the deal signed on March 4, the LPF will receive €27.5 million per season from Intel Sky Broadcast.

RCS&RDS filed a complaint with the CC against the LPF on May 29, arguing that the deal violated competition law.

Meanwhile, UPC (Focus Sat) and the IPTV platform iNES have signed agreements with Intel to transmit matches shown on the channels Look TV and Look Plus.

Romtelecom, on the other hand, is still involved in negotiations.
