Reduce the fan noise of your IPbox 910

The Fan in IPBox 910 is directly connected with the 12V supply, through a 100R resistor, so it can't be disabled without hardware modifications.
If you haven't installed any harddisk you can try and disconnect it. That should be OK as the power-consumption is equal to the 900 box.

You can make the fan inaudible if you are handy with a soldering iron:
*Unplug the box.
*substitute R43 (100R resistor placed at the left side of the PSU - just below the text) with an 150R to 180R, 1/2W resistor.

I used 180R myself, but if your box seems hot you must use a lower value.

My fan was LOUD LOUD LOUD!!!in my IP9000. I replaced it with a good quality ball bearing type from a computer part shop. Nice and quiet! It is 12V 0.08A. The original was a sleeve bearing type, cheap and nasty!. I noticed that the hard drive always stays on, even in standby, but the fan goes off. The hdd was then getting VERY hot. The hdd only goes off if the STB Power Control menu is set to Shutdown. The fan control in the HDD setup menu only brings the fan on when the box is on, or switches the fan permanently off, leaving the hdd without any cooling. I have had problems when hdds get too hot, so I wired the fan into the hdds 12V supply. Hdd on, fan on. I have put a small 12V fan on the processor, fed from the original fan supply socket. The control for this is ok, the processor is now also nice and cool.

@bobdisk - Update your box firmware. In the latest versions the HDD standby/sleep issue is resolved.

The noise produced by the fan is caused by the air-flow over the fan-blades. So changing to a ball bearing type will not help you - unless it is moves less air or has a better aerodynamic design.
Take care not to overload the 100R resistor, 0.5W (R43). It's overloaded if you can measure more than 7V over it!

arken: I am running official r8630, 23 dec. Is the correction supposed to be in that? I havent noticed, but I will check.
IPnord: It was mechanical noise from a bad fan bearing that I could hear over air noise, which wasnt too bad, so a good quality fan with next to no bearing noise, did help. The new fan is wired directly to the hdd 12V supply, but I will check that resistor just in case.

@bobdisk The latest DGS official is 8728. I am sure that I have read in the release notes that this issue is fixed. At last my HDD is sleeping when not used.
You can always check the powerstate of the disk with
hdparm -C /dev/sda (or wathever is your hdd id)

It is not allowed to post links to external sites here.
You can download SifTeam and NLB releases based on official DGS from the corresponding threads in this forum.
The officeal DGS site is dgstation.co.kr.

Good luck!
