Poland takes 3D initiative
08.16 Europe/London, July 5, 2011 By Chris Dziadul

The Polish TV production company Astro SA has launched its first four channels, three of which are in 3D. Their distribution on a trial basis will start on a number of selected cable networks in the next few days.

The new channels are NEXT Man 3D, targeting male viewers; NEXT Lejdis 3D, aimed at a female audience; NEXT Young 3D, as its name implies for young viewers; and NEXT Music HD, offering music from the 70s, 80s and 90s.

Speaking to Wirtualne Media, Ryszard Krajewski, Astro’s majority shareholder, said most of the 3D content carried by the 3D channels would be produced in-house due to its scarcity on the open market.

In total, the 3D channels would offer between 60-80% of their programming in the format, with the remainder being in HD or even SD.

Krajewski added that the company plans to launch another six HD channels, among them a service named Next 24/7HD, by this October.

Astro has been operating for 16 years and for most of its history has produced content for TVP, Polsat and TVN, Poland’s three leading broadcasters.

It also helped launch a TV station named Superstacja back in 2005 and last December set up a web portal named OOGNET.

The company began producing 3D content half a year ago in the world’s first-ever virtual 3D studio in Warsaw, employing technology supplied by ORAD. The NEXT brand will eventually encompass 10 channels.
