Pakistan cancels licences of six TV channels

by Andy Sennitt.

The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) on Monday cancelled the licences of six TV channels. The authority cancelled the licences of Aaj Entertainment, Geo English, Mirror TV and Roze TV, as they failed to “launch their transmission/operations, as required under the terms & conditions of the licence,” said a statement. A channel is required to be operational within one year from the award of licence.

“The authority had offered them extension for another one year to get themselves operational, which has also lapsed,” the statement said. It added that since the TV channels failed to launch transmission despite relaxations, PEMRA had no other option but to cancel these licences.

The licences of ZAM TV and Info TV were cancelled as they suspended broadcasts without informing the authority, which is violation of section 28 of PEMRA (Amendment Act) 2007.The meeting also approved issuing one non-commercial FM radio licence to Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) for Karachi to impart information and awareness for passengers as well as the general public on air traffic, flights info, air safety, passenger safety and rules.
