A police spokesman confirmed that a police car did escort the referee to his hotel from Stamford Bridge last night, but officers did not advise him to change his accommodation plans. The decision to change hotels was taken by the Uefa referees team.
Today, an Oslo police spokesman said:
“We are watching closely what is being posted on the internet. Anything we believe would threaten his personal safety will be taken seriously.
The official at Stamford Bridge last night, who inexplicably failed to award Chelsea a penalty despite four strong appeals, has admitted mistakes before.
At Euro 2008 Ovrebo, one of 12 referees selected for the tournament, controversially disallowed Luca Toni's goal for Italy against Romania. The game ended 1-1 and only then did the referee say he was 'wrong'.
The Italian Football Federation, funnily enough, weren't overly impressed and demanded an apology.
Ovrebo has been the referee for 22 matches in Europe's premier club competition. More than half (12) of these games featured teams from England or Scotland !
