ORS eyes German broadcast market

The new German telecommunications act (Telekommunikationsgesetz – TKG) will open the provider market for network operators in 2016.
At this year’s Medientreffpunkt in Leipzig, Frank Schulz of the Austrian broadcasting services ORS said it now wants to start having talks with German broadcasters.
In order to benefit from increased competition in the terrestrial network market, radio stations should enter into dialogue with new providers immediately.
“Anyone, who wants to have in 2016 a new transmitter network operator needs to do something now,” said Schulz during a panel discussion anel of the Association of Commercial Broadcasters (VPRT).
New network operators need time to investigate the legal and technical requirements of the transmitter sites. The ORS, the facilities company partly owned by Austrian public broadcaster ORF, announced its intention to expand into the German market.
“We operate a network and want to do so in Germany. Currently, we are already talking with potential clients about their needs,”said Schulz.
The Austrians want to compete with Media Broadcast, which has a dominant position in Germany, according to experts.
“Currently, the market is characterized by price increases and lack of competition,” said Sebastian Artymiak of the VPRT. With the telecommunications act the market will now start moving. “We now come in the hot phase,” said Artymiak.
