On-demand TV in demand, HD & 3D failing to impress

HD and 3D TV are failing to impress, as the UK’s TV viewers put digital recording features, on-demand content and subscription-free viewing on their list of ‘must have’ TV features, according to research from set-top box provider Humax.

The survey of 2,000 UK adults reveals that less than a quarter (23 per cent) think HD content is essential for TV viewing and only 3 per cent see the appeal in 3D TV. Other features ranked more highly on the nation’s wish list, such as subscription-free TV (43 per cent), live pause and rewind (32 per cent) and integrated on-demand services like BBC iPlayer and ITV Player (26 per cent).

The research reveals that 65 per cent of UK adults now have a digital TV recorder and the vast majority of these (87 per cent) regularly record content. This may be influencing viewing habits, with 28 per cent saying they prefer to watch recorded programmes, compared to 58 per cent who favour live TV.

Despite the growing ownership of smartphones and tablets, the research also shows that the TV is the preferred way to watch on-demand and catch-up content and not mobile devices.

“TV viewers have never had so much choice when it comes to accessing and watching content and the research provides new insights into the services and features they value,” comments Graham North Commercial Director of Humax. “Since the digital switchover, every household in the UK can enjoy a wide range of subscription-free TV channels and viewers are keen to enhance their experience further with features like integrated catch-up content and advanced recording. By understanding what drives consumer preferences, Humax can continue to evolve its range and ensure the viewing experience is at the centre of our efforts.”
