Ofcom identifies local TV sites
10.57 Europe/London, December 13, 2011 By Chris Dziadul

UK regulator Ofcom has identified 20 specific sites for a local TV multiplex that it will advertise if proposed legislation is passed by parliament.

The sites, which will now go to consultation, have been selected from ones where local TV is technically possible and Ofcom considers there is a potential local service operator.

They have also been selected to achieve a range of locations across the UK, as well as a range of scale of operations, with Ofcom in addition taking into account evidence of strong local demand.

The 20 sites are Belfast, Birmingham, Brighton & Hove, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Grimsby, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Norwich, Nottingham, Oxford, Plymouth, Preston, Southampton and Swansea.

Ofcom has also said it will award the multiplex licence partly on the basis of additional coverage.

The additional sites it proposes are Aberdeen, Ayr, Bangor, Barnstable, Basingstoke, Bedford, Cambridge, Carlisle, Derry/Londonderry, Dundee, Guildford, Hereford, Inverness, Kidderminster, Limavady, Luton, Maidstone, Malvern, Mold, Salisbury, Sheffield, Stoke on Trent, Stratford upon Avon and York.
