New private satellite channel testing in Algeria
November 1st, 2011 - 17:24 UTC
by Andy Sennitt.

The Arabic daily Echorouk has symbolically launched its TV channel today, the first private satellite channel* in Algeria, as part of the programme of reforms announced by the president in the audiovisual sector. For the moment, the channel is simply displaying its logo, awaiting the adoption by parliament of the bill on the opening of private channels announced as part of the reform program.

The channel, in addition to the Arabic-language programmes, will also broadcast in Tamazight and French. It was launched to mark the 57th anniversary of the outbreak of the War of Independence and the 11th anniversary of the daily newspaper. The official start of regular programmes is scheduled for late February or early March, according to the boss of the daily Anis M Fodil. “Meanwhile, we will broadcast test programmes such as documentaries,” he added.
