New plans for Italian DTT
11.14 Europe/London, January 19, 2012 By Julian Clover

Italy’s minister for economic development, Corrado Passera, has said he intends to put forward new proposals for the allocation of DTT frequencies to the Council of Ministers on Friday.

The previous ‘beauty contest’ was initiated by the previous government under Silvio Berlusconi.

Passera told parliament that plans to offer the capacity, freed up by Italy’s move to all digital broadcasting, had been put forward in a very different economic and social context to the present one where the State must demonstrate that it can maximise its resources. Given that the Government was asking its citizens to make financial sacrifices the resources of the state should be carefully guarded.

Rather than conduct a beauty contest it now seems likely that a public tender will instead be put forward. However, this will still take into account an ongoing comparison of those parties involved.

Passera said he would be mindful of any European legislation.

In March 2011 Sky Italia pulled out of the beauty contest, blaming the protracted process and the uncertain outcome that it says has made it impossible to budget for any investment. The satcaster was only allowed to participate after the intervention of the European Commission.
