New DTH platform for Hungary
11.51 Europe/London, November 24, 2011 By Chris Dziadul

The Hungarian incumbent telco Magyar Telekom will launch a new satellite TV platform on December 1. Known as Interactive Sat TV, it will be the first in the country to offer a broad range of interactive services.

Magyar Telekom, which offers TV services under the brand name T-Home, launched an IPTV service five years ago and this now has some 200,000 subscribers.

The new Amos-delivered satellite offer, which may be ordered in addition to the company’s internet service, will provide interactive functions, digital audio and picture quality, HD channels and an EPG, as well as access to the Videotheque (VOD) library, including Sony movies, YouTube and other features.

Reception will be possible through an Interactive Sat TV set-top box and digital home gateway router, as well as T-Home internet service with minimum guaranteed downloads speeds of 1Mbps. A basic package with a two-year contract will cost HUF1,900 (€6.17 million) a month plus existing T-Home internet and telephony subscription.

However, as part of promotion, installation will be offered for free, as well as the premium option and seven movies from Videotheque, viewable until January 13, 2012.

Deutsche Telekom-backed Magyar Telekom has until now operated a DTH platform known as T-Home Sat. It is part of a general Telekom strategy to support its IPTV services with a satellite platform.

This September it signed a long-term agreement worth $7 million (€5.2 million) with Spacecom for additional capacity on Amos.
