Municipal firm to offer DTH and IPTV in Ecuador
Empresa Municipal de Telecomunicaciones, Agua Potable, Alcantarillado y Saneamiento (Etapa), located in the city of Cuenca, will start operating DTH services in Ecuador next February 2013. Its IPTV system is expected to be implemented in the second stage of the project.
The total investment of the project amounted to USD 20 million. The firm expects to render services to 10,000 users in the first stage and to reach 50 thousand clients within the first five years. Likewise, in addition to rendering Pay-TV services in Cuenca, in 2011, Etapa was granted authorization by the National Telecommunications Council (Conatel in Spanish) to render services at a national level.
The first stage of the project is aimed at rendering DTH services in Cuenca since it is included in the public purchase portal to be assigned next December 7. The second stage will include the implementation of IPTV system, technology that is not currently operational in the country. Juan Córdoba, Etapa Manager, confirmed the Ecuadorian newspaper El Tiempo that the firm is installing pipelines in households, which are being included in sidewalk works in the city.
“The objective is to set an optic fiber network that replaces the current Internet server within the next two years”, stated Córdoba. Therefore, the firm will be able to implement an IPTV platform easily in the city. The officer also mentioned that the firm will enter into agreements with programmers for the first trials that will take place in January and the commercialization of the service in February 2013.
