Malone moves closer to Europe
Billionaire John ‘King of cable’ Malone is making a serious move into Europe. Malone, born in 1941, is perhaps thinking of a quiet retirement, as well as getting closer to his Irish roots by buying a spectacular castle in County Wicklow (some 44 miles south of Dublin), reportedly with an €8 million price tag.
The property, Humewood Castle, is 142-years-old and the estate includes the 15-bedroom castle, and 427 acres of woods, private lakes, staff cottages and three gate-lodges. Malone’s family ties extend to nearby County Cork. Malone has reportedly done well by buying at something of a knock-down price. Back in 2006, the castle sold for €25 million
Malone’s business interests include Liberty Media/Liberty Global, Discovery Communications, and European cable giant UPC as well as his Liberty Ventures investment vehicle with holdings in Time Warner/TWC, AOL, Expedia and a growing stake in TripAdvisor (he bought out Barry Diller just before Christmas for $300 million).
Malone is domiciled in Denver, Colorado but has huge land holdings in Maine.
