Majority of US multichannel homes have a DVR
By Jamie Beach December 3rd, 2012

Just over half (52%) of US households that subscribe to a multichannel video service have a digital video recorder (DVR), compared to 4% of TV households that do not subscribe to a multi-channel video service, according to Leichtman Research Group.

In addition, 43% of all households with a DVR now have a DVR connected on more than one TV set, found the study, which was conducted with over 1,300 US homes throughout the US.

About one-fifth (20%) of all TV households now have a DVR on more than one TV set, an increase from 6% five years ago, suggesting that consumers increasingly see them as essential to the viewing experience.

Interestingly, it is telco TV subscribers who lead DVR uptake, with 71% of them having a DVR, compared to 63% of DBS subscribers, and 42% of cable subscribers, reports Leichtman.

The survey also found an increase in Netflix subscribers having a premium service (51% of Netflix subscribers who subscribe to a multichannel video service this year vs. 43% last year, and 40% in 2010), and a decrease in those who would consider dropping a premium service because of Netflix (20% this year vs. 36% last year, and 32% in 2010).
